Being a business owner I can say that I would take the job.
As a business owner there are many freedoms but most people do not realize the pressure and stress that comes with it.
To be perfectly honest if the money was the same either way I would still take the job and have less stress.

Ive done both. Working for yourself is a pain in many ways. Estimated quarterly taxes, paying for your own benefits, setting up your own IRA ..its a lot more work than just the job. Id take the 250,000 UNLESS the 100,000 working for myself was my total passion and joy in life if I was doing that id work for myself for less than half the money of working for someone else even with all the headaches of self employment. Part of the reason being is if I was working for my passion, id very quickly be making WAY more than the 100k I started out making.

The one thing to remember is that the reason a job will pay $250,000 is that there is going to be a lot of stress and BS to put up with.

Depends on what the self employed job is. Money isn't everything. If it was something I could really enjoy and wasn't too stressful id work for myself. But typically much longer hours and more stress is involved with being self employed.

An extra $150,000 to blow is a great way to forget about your shitty boss. That can finance all sorts of expensive hobbies. Plus we all know how much money means to women, and a woman is a great way to relax about a bad day at work. Id say id go with the $250,000 job.

I've owned multiple retail stores and made a lot of money doing it and I can tell you first hand that the stress isn't worth it. The best thing I ever did was sell the business. That being said, I'm about to open a new online outdoors store. lol Why would I do it If it's so bad? Like others have said it's my passion. I'm keeping it small and have no desire to ever grow it. I won't have any business partners to worry about, I'm not relying on it as a primary income, I don't have to worry about how I'm gonna make payroll during a dry spell, etc etc etc. Most importantly I don't have to worry about my success coming from the performance of other people. This will cause you to spend every waking hour making sure things are running smoothly and have no time for anything or anybody else.

I encourage everyone to have a small part-time business doing what you love, but nothing on a larger scale. It's too exhausting!!!!

Completely dependent on the job. If the 250,000 was sucking dick all day and the 100,000 was being a professional beer taster/couch tester then obviously the 100.000 and vice versa lol I really can't decide based on the info given

you end up paying MORE taxes being self employed (you would also have to pay the employers share of social security taxes). and since no employer, your taxes effectively go up 8%

I'd rather be an employee making the $250. it's a no brainer...

How does that work? I'm thinking your math is off a bit. I make a little over $100k the last 3 years and my take home is over $1500 a week after pension, benefits and tax. I know you said a little over but $500 is more than a little I think.

I've had business and worked nights weekends etc. Made a ton of money but had no free time.

A decent job and you get all benefits. M-F 9-5. Weekends off. Lots of vacation. And you know paycheck will be there whether you do nothing or work your ass off.
