In Florida crocs use to be the dominate species but people started buying pythons and when they got to big they released them into the wild and they have thrived in the environment getting so big they are not eating the crocodiles, even the Big crocs. There are some BIG snakes out there. They even allow hunting the snakes now.

Yeah they can. I had a python that didnt eat for 6 months. I was sure she was going to die but Nope, she just wasnt hungry. She lived 17 years until one of my trips to Thailand in December my house keeper turned off the heat while cleaning (you know you got a good one if she gets to warm when cleaning) and forgot to turn it on. My house got cold (under 50 deg) for a couple of days and my snake didn't survive.

They can still move and can still protect themselfs. It's funny, after a short time they pretty much look normal. Their stomach muscles crush whatever they eat until it's pretty undetectable but it takes a while.

Now this would suck, after all that hard work the snake was forced to give up it's meal. I'm not sure why they just didnt let the snake go. The dog was dead and now the snake is hungry again. They get a LOT bigger than this also so I'm sure it's not hard to eat a small kid or even an adult.

Yea that's crazy to swallow something that big. I have had a couple Burmese pythons and they would hide for like 2-3 days after eating. They are very vulnerable in an engorged state because they can't defend themselves. But it only last a few days.

I'd like a snake or iguana as a pet. No way the wife will go for that......and she'd possibly eat both. Lol

Anyone have a pet iguana before?

I/we also use to have 2 big iguanas. I had one for several years and was given a 2nd one. Their cages take up a fair amount of room and they dont play well together sometimes.

It was funny when my daughter was little neighborhood kids would come over with her and the first thin they would say is your daughter is a liar, she say she has a python, iguanas and tarantula. News spread quickly she was not lying and of course everyone wanted to see them. lol It was all good until she started getting rats. The babies were good for feeding the snake but they didnt eat enough of them and the breed quickly.

mice and when she got grown I started breeding rats for her. I did go to the shelter a few times and got around 6 month old cats. I think may three times. She wasn't picky. Her parents were huge, they had to feed them things grown sheep or something cause they were huge.

What's the temperament of iguanas? They look docile.

Yeah they like it warm, around 85+ but room temp is OK most of the time especially if you want them to be docile as noted. They need handled frequently or they get aggressive and always watch out for the tail.

I'm not a fan of spiders either but my daughter wanted a trantula and they are cheap/easy to care for. They are sort of different that normal spiders since they are big and I have even held a few. They are not exactly my 1st choice of a pet though. lol

Interesting. I had heard they could get aggressive and some may grow to 18ft. Are they clean animals or messy? I guess all animals are "messy" to a degree. Just curious about how much care is required etc.

Tarantula? Ya, no thanks. The only good spider is a squished one. YUCK.

18ft Iguana??? DAMN that would be big. I think you are talking about a Komodo dragon and they are dangerous/deadly. Actually illegal to own in the US. Yeah my daughter had one of those also not long ago but it was a baby.

I cant agree more. A good spider is a dead spider. I use to have a pretty bad phobia with spiders. I still dont like them at all but I'm not nearly as bad as I use to be.

I used to have a west African dwarf crocodile as a pet. It was actually a pretty good pet. It would only go to the bathroom in water. So I had a kitty litter box in the kitchen filled with water. It would come out from under the couch at night and eat chicken that I would throw in the water and it would go to the bathroom then go back under the couch. I recorded it barking (grunting) one day and whenever I couldnt find it I would play the tape. It would think its another croc and would respond by barking back. He bit me once, which sucked; obviously. Lol.

Wow, that's crazy! I like the idea but just the fact he but you......well no thanks. Sure, dogs and cats bite too but even a dwarf croc would worry me a bit more.

Yeah, when he bit me he released so quickly that it didnt tear the skin off my hand. It just left several puncture wounds. He bit my friends sister, and she pulled her hand away and it degloved her finger. I had given it to my friend and it was his when it bit his sister. But I still felt bad. He use to live under my couch, and when people would come over I would tell them "be careful there is a crocodile under the couch." People always looked at me strange, as expected, but of course they didnt beleive me. But later in the evening when he would start making noises they would always freak out. Then I would laugh and tell them I warned them. He was not tame, at all. But he also wouldnt bite you unless your hand was withing six inches from his face. They were endangered species and zoo's were having trouble getting them to breed. So a zoo decided to let several of them to be raised in different environments. I offered to keep him for two years and my friend kept it for one year before returning him to the zoo.
