It works now... Hockey players are the toughest/craziest sports players there are... Barenuckle fighting on a hard surface, throats being slashed with skates, and skating is the fastest way a person can move without the use of machines.

Before face masks, hockey players didn't use curved sticks. So the puck wasn't going anywhere near as fast as it does now. And because the sticks weren't curved, you didn't have pucks flying as high as they do now when shot. Plus, they're a lot better of athletes now. Hockey players today train year round. In the old days, they got regular jobs in the off season.
If they stopped playing with face masks today, goalies would be risking death every game they play.

They were nuts but the shot speed was a fraction of what it is now. I love hockey my league just ended last night. It sounds like bs but I once put a guy through the glass right at centre ice.

Worst thing that can happen right there you forgot the Taylor hall stepped on by his teammate one. He was lucky it was just above the eye.
