Anyone Used Cerakote ?
I have been carrying a Glock 23 for a while now. But I've gotten an itch for a Kimber 1911. I can't scratch that itch due to price. So I decided to upgrade my Colt Combat Commander. I've been putting a lot of stainless Wilson Combat parts on it. It has become my everyday carry now. But the slide on my waist side has picked up some rust. I know this is due to sweat and ph etc. I want to have it Cerakoted to stop this issue. Has anyone had their weapon coated? Were you pleased? How does it wear?

I have a high-end AR that is Cerakoted. I like it. Haven't put enough lead down range to give a long-term report, but it seems quite durable Have an AR10 coming from the same manufacturer (if it ever gets here - they are 4 months late already). There are numerous places that do it down this way. Check out a custom rifle or pistol forum and see who gets high marks in your area. No reason to ship it all over the world if you can have it done locally. Also, you seem pretty handy. You can certainly do it yourself. I'm not handy with anything more complicated than a spatula, so I let someone with experience and skill do it.

I bought my 5.56 from a company called Legion Firearms out of Temple. Was turned on to them by some guys at Surefire. They were building some top-notch shit, but they have really fallen off schedule. They promised my 7.62X54 by January 1 and I still don't have it. Issues with suppressors, too. I think they have had a lot of personnel changes. A lot of these ex-SG guys seem to jump companies pretty regularly. In retrospect, LaRue may have been a better choice. They build a damn fine rifle (albeit a pretty f'n heavy .308, if you hang a bipod, suppressor and night vision on it).

I have a guy that does it. He is 1911 guru. I just really had not heard of it until recently.
You wouldn't call me handy if you saw what I did to the ambidextrous safety I tried to fit and install.

we have a lot of hogs here, and I have quite a few properties. They make a mess of things; and can be quite difficult to get rid of. Might as well have fun while doing it. I also have an UZI on the way. Not real accurate, but damn quiet with a moussad suppressor. Good to about 60 yards with subsonic rounds, which means I can sit on the back porch of the lake house and hit them at the edge of the water, and the neighbors never hear a thing :-)

Lots of the guys around here run them with dogs and tie them up to sell. I've stitched up too many cut up / dying dogs and had too many broken bones to enjoy such endeavors at this point in my life.
Cape, it sounds like you need to come over this way and meet up with me and cajun to do some damage some weekend - but not while anyone is trying to cut!

Oh I prefer a gun. But up close and personal with a dog on each ear and one on the leg. The look in the boars eye. You know if he breaks he's not running he's coming for you. Can you make the tree? Will the dogs hold him? That sound when he pops his teeth. The squeals and barks. The thrashing in the thickest sh!t imaginable. Oh yeah.

Cape, consider a melonite finish. It's essentially the same as Glocks Tenifer finish. Instead of a coating like the Cerokate, it's a process that bonds the finish the metel. It doesn't get much more durable.

Because the Cerakote finish is like many other baked on finishes, It will rub off and show wear over time leaving you with a trashy looking pistol. The Melonite is a chemical bonding that makes the finish part of the metal. It is so hard that after finished, you cannot hardly mill the gun.

pretty good discussion of Cerakote vs. Melonite vs. IonBond on the AR15 site.
...or just break down and get the Kimber. Damn fine pistols.

I haven't got any personal experience with Cerakote, but I had the same problem with a stainless Colt Officer's ACP that was a carry. I later bought a SigP220 carry and a Sig Ultra and haven't had any problem with either. I had a Colt Commander in .38 Super, later got rid of it....wish I hadn't.
If/when you have the work done, would you post up a couple of pics??Last edited by almostgone; 04-04-2014 at 02:21 AM.

I think most guys that juice are hard-charging "type-A" guys. You have to be the type that wants to transform yourself badly enough to get educated, formulate a plan and have the discipline to implement it. Seems like those types of guys are usually into firearms, explosives, contact sports, adventure and speed.
