    Restrepo/Korengal

If you haven't seen the movie Restrepo then you absolutely need to. It is a documentary by a good friend of mine named Sebastian Junger and some of his colleagues who followed my company around in Afghanistan (B. Co., 2-503rd, 173rd ABCT, Italy). It takes place in the Korengal Valley in the Kunar (Konar in some spellings) Province. The platoon in Restrepo was in my company, our platoon was just a few thousand meters down the road at the other end of the valley.

They have another movie coming out called Korengal and the details can be found on their FB page below. I would recommend watching it as it gives one of the more accurate experiences of combat in AFG.

Saw this a couple years back, amazing film and somewhat soul crushing at the same time. Very realistic depiction of a part of the war that we never really get to see because of how dangerous of an area it is. I will be looking forward to Korengal I didn't know about it, thanks for the info. Another documentary I saw around the same time was Armadillo which follows danish soldiers and its pretty interesting as well.

Yea I saw this a few years ago. It won a bunch of awards I believe. Was Definetly one of the most powerful documentaries to watch. If it brings tears to ur eyes than it's worth watching.

Glad you guys liked it, I will tell you a little behind the scenes story.

Sebastian came out there to film and wanted to make a documentary although none of us thought it would get anywhere. But before him there were two others that came out to make the same documentary. There was a guy with another platoon and a female that was attached to our platoon. Her first patrol with us happened to be a mounted patrol in HMMWVs into one of the worst parts of our sector. Well long story short, I was in the turret and she was in the back seat and when we started getting shot at she freaked out crying and puked all over the inside of the HMMWV. I was a private at the time so I had to clean it up which was great. The worst part was that she was in an armored HMMWV which means those bullets were just pegging off of her window with no real fear of getting hurt.

All in all, she left a few days after that, that was her only patrol, and Junger came out to replace her.

This is all the bullets really do to the windows and these were armor piercing so I am not sure why she freaked out so much. Click image for larger version.

I never watched it but will def try to this week.

Do you believe the US being there is benficial or a complete waste of time? I am always curious to get a soliders point of view. From some of the stuff I have seen on TV it sounds like for every 1 person that is killed from the US whether solider or drone it causes a 100 kids to enlist and become terrorists

I was in the 503rd during that deployment , not in battle company 2 nd plt though. Many of those guys are my friends. I still haven't been able to watch the movie. Saw the liveleak feed of the part where they walk up to Larry's body and lost it. 2 medal of honors were given to my brothers. I loved being over there with those guys and hated it at the same time. I do feel honored to have served and been able to train with some of the greatest soldiers I've ever seen.

**** yeah I do, I never spent much time on SS11 except for the strip clubs there and drunken go cart racing. Those things go pretty fast, I wrecked into my buddy one time and he lost his shoes. I knew the owner of Kiss and he let me have unlimited free drinks but other than that it seemed like it had too many young teens and gays in there and for a straight guy it is not my type of hook up spot.

My big thing was a small bar down the stairs from the square in the little square, the one with the pink bar on the stairs. Just below that was a bar called La Piazza 7A, it is closed now, but those guys there owned the bar and two other clubs. It was a badass place to eat and drink. A shame it is closed now.

I still have a few buddies in Vicenza til 2016 so I try to visit once a year. What company were you in mod? I never knew Rougle that well as I was never in his platoon. When he died in Rock Avalanche I was in D. Co. and we were set up on top of the valley in an overwatch so we didn't see much action that mission.
