I got a 89 kx 250 and 98 kx250 race ready 2stroke and a kfx 400, the newer dirtbike is my baby it is so fast you wouldn't believe I invested about 3k in engine upgrades and that's me doing all the work haven't meet a 450 yet that can beat it. I go to busco beach and Hatfield macoy trails sometimes and I race at local tracksLast edited by djgreen; 07-13-2015 at 01:03 PM.

Nice, do you have paddles for sand? I have done a lot of trail ridding also but the sand is great.
My 1st ATV was a 1986 Kawasaki Mohave 250. I sold it to a buddy who lives in Tahoe and it still runs. I believe I did the 1st ECU upgrade on one since I bought it new in 1986. I did some research because I wanted a higher rev and discovered the ECU from a similar year dirt bike had a 1000 rpm higher rev limeter and by changing a couple wires it was compatible.

Just realized I said 2016 and it's only 2015. lol
I wish these videos showed just how steep some of these hills are, you would be amazed. My buddy and I actually helped make a few of the YEARS ago. We started by going down a few times to clear the path, make tracks then started going up. It sucks when you get near the top and get stuck. Ive rolled down more than a few. lol
One of the hills I rolled down was up an old logging trail on Mt. Rainer. Saying it was steep is an understatement. It was mostly clear cut for a couple hundred yards then into a tree line so lots of stumps on the clear cut part. I hit a root of a tree and hole at the same time and it bounced me off the trail right down the hill. I stopped about 30 ft down after my ATV bouncing and landing on my chest front bumper first knocking the wind out of me and popping a rib in my back out of place as well as a few other minor injuries. My quad stopped after going into the treeline and being caught hanging in a tree. LOL
Saying it was a little tweaked was an understatement and was never the same after that but got stolen 6 months later. lol Sucked because there was no way to get it back up. To far to winch. I had to ride and push it down the hill further until I found another logging road and then ride with a sprained wrist until I found where it connected with the other road and meet up with my co riders. Fun trip.
The hill was like this.

I spend a bit more time on bikes than quads. Used to go to the dunes outside fallon nevada as a kid multiple times a year. But haven't been out to those Oregon dunes in almost 6 years. I have a couple yfz450s, one fuel injected with a fair amount of aftermarket. But also have a yzf450 that I ride most of the time. A few other machines. But right now my big project is building my CR500 afc. I've completely torn down the engine and replaced basically everything except the transmission. Bottom end rebuild, top end bore, clutch, collars, seals, bearings, etc. I have 450 dollars invested in a rolling chassis, and over 1500 in rebuilding the engine, plus new fmf fatty pipe and all that stuff. I'm hoping to do the frame conversion fairly cheaply. Get the thing going then worry about making it look nice. I need to have it done by winter since I am going to be putting a timbersled track on it for the snow, and already pre-ordered it.
I'm curious about your raptor, it looks really nice, I need to do something with my engine, it was painted once upon a time, and want to spruce it back up, because the engine is multicolored now. It was painted a nice grey, but stock black is coming through, and I replaced the inner side cover which is bare aluminum, so it is multicolored. I would really like to finish off the look of the machine with new plastics, some powder coating of parts etc, but that might wait till next year if I have funds again by then.

Ive ridden or should say been jeeping outside Fallon. I have a buddy who lives in Tahao and we spent the day/night at Fallon visiting another buddy who flew F18s. The next day when we were out jeeping we meet some other guys and just shooting the breeze and mentioned our buddy said he would try to do a fly by in his F18 and they got all weird actually saying we were full of sh*t and making things up. We were like Why would we do that, it's not that big of a deal and just as one of them started getting aggressive about it (really strange) 2 F18 did a LOW level fly by. The looks on their faces was priceless.

Man that's me. I work/play with my toys tuning and prepping 10x more than I play with them.
My ATVs have been sitting in my storage shed for 4 years. I bought them to replace the 3 that got stolen 3 days after my mom died from her garage. Long story but it was the meth head neighbors. I only rode the other ones maybe 3x and the wife rode 1x before they were stolen.
My battery was of course dead in my Raptor 700 even though it was on a tender. The Yfz450 started right up and then died, started again then died. The next day started and died then wouldnt start. Didnt hear the fuel pump anymore and after testing several things figured out the fuel pump had died. Took it out of the tank and tested it and yup, it's dead, wouldn't spin and only got hot. Started to search and you have to buy the whole unit, $300
Well I'm not one to just settle for buying a while unit like that on anything so I tore it apart, started doing research on flow, PSI and GPM and found a few different suppliers for $20 down to $17 from China. They are ALL made in china, Yamaha. I ordered two from 2 different suppliers and got on in less than a week, put it in today and works 100% like new.
It's taken a few days because I wanted to put new plugs in everything, change the oil since I hadnt done that yet and my Raptor 700 needed headlights. Got everything done except one light to finish hooking up tomorrow and it's ready to go.
Do you ride? Are you going to be there?

That's awesome you were able to source the specific part. I've been doing mostly building this year, and still not finished. Working on bikes mostly, but I bought another yfz450, carburetor model and the thing bogs like crazy off of idle as you give it throttle. I dunno if it is because he retarded the exhaust cam or if there is another issue. The dealer said to change the plug, it is basically on the back burner as I get time I work on others first. But now I want to sell the dumb thing. The idle air screw on the carb is ridiculously hard to turn, and took me forever even to get it to idle. I replaced the boot between the carb and the intake manifold, as it was cracking and had sealant on it, didn't help anything either. Jetting doesn't fix the problem.
This weekend I finished the clutch rebuild on my cr500, and ready to reinstall everything, but realized I probably need a new clutch lifter, which is on back order, then I was torqueing the case bolts and broke one off so had to split the cases again. It was weird though my lifter wasn't engaging early on and then if you slide it out so it butts up against the stator stopping plate it doesn't engage at all, the lifter is pretty worn and lousy looking. 58 bucks, and now after looking at my kick start shaft it looks like it is worn as well at the oil seal location, just like I had to replace all my collars. That's another 100 bucks. I don't think I will rebuild a motor that old again, or find one that was better taken care of.

That the zip tie mod? I watched the vid and tried getting in there and adjusting it but never did the zip tie mod. That link doesn't work.

Strange, I just tried and it works for me still. Just Google. Yes it actually worked for me. You should check out YFZCentral forum. I just made a thread how to fix the fuel pump on the 2009+ fuel injected saving everyone $300 or more. $20 for the pump vs $300+ for the assembly. You could only find the assembly before.
The valve adjustment is a big deal on the YFZ450 also.

Thanks, I will try with that mod first. Hope it helps. I could see the valves being out of adjustment as well. I don't think he took care of the machine, should have seen how much sand I was able to remove out of the bottom of the air box, almost an inch of sand/hardened oil.

Yep I was quite shocked he didn't even clean the air filter. But the market right when I bought it was kind of going crazy and every vehicle I called on would sell before I could look at it. I rode another one that ran right but the thing was hammered cosmetically.
He told me he had a full service done, where they checked the valves, adjusted the exhaust cam back to stock, jetted it etc. I went to the service dealer and had them pull his record. Apparently they did the full service, but only checked the valves, never touched the timing, checked the jetting and said it was good. Really they did nothing but check everything and clean the carb. So I was assuming it was just some problem that needed a fix. I'm going to try your suggestion and then change out the plug if I can find time.
I bought two of these things recently, have always liked them but really dirt bike more, after I buy my wife her nice fuel injected R model, she finally tries riding a dirt bike. And sadly I think she likes the bike more. I was thinking the quads would be decent for taking the kids on put put rides and still have something I could have fun on, but now I dunno about the space they take up in my garage. I would almost rather sell them and get a side by side the smaller kids can ride in and I can go as slow as I want while they are riding their little machines. Just a little out of my price range right now, since I want a new house.

When you park/store them take most if not all the gas out and stand them up on the back wheels. They take a lot less room. Either that or build a cage and stack them.

That's not a bad idea, would probably need to pull the batteries as well, shouldn't have oil leaking out of the crankcase vent tubes? I wouldn't think so, we used to stand them up in the back of the truck to fit more when we went on trips.
I need to get a sand dune trip planned out. Definitely need to once I get my 500 broke in if I don't before. That's where the four wheelers are the most fun.

No reason to remove the battery, they are sealed and no oil leak issues., Only gas. They are shipped standing up also.

Made it to the last few days of Dune fest and survived without any long lasting injuries except a little exhaust burn on the leg. lol Now I remember why you should not ride wearing shorts.
Had a good time. Wife and daughter got some good experiences for their 1st time riding. Wife decided she like my quad better than hers.
Had some nice windy days so the daughter and wife got to fly kites during the down time and we were able to ride right up the the beach/ocean from the dunes.
I had to LOL at all the people getting stuck in the sand in their BIG 4x4 trucks even without trailers and had to be towed out by at tractor and I was in a little SUV pulling a loaded 14ft trailer and went in deeper than them and not getting stuck due to knowing how to drop tire pressure down to 15 lbs to get traction in the sand.
We spent 2 days camping in the dunes and 2 days down the road at a little RV camp ground.

^^^^ looks like a great time, LB! Of course she liked your wheeler better LOL...
Nice pics too! Some steep a$$ hills huh... Lol

The pictures dont come close to doing the steep hills justice. That one is called Banshee hill. It really is not much of a challenge anymore but use to be. There is a trail off to the left that goes through the trees and is just as steep but only wide enough for one quad. A buddy and I made it several years ago and it looks like it still has not been ridden to much. I went up it once while there. We started it by only going down a few times, not up. lol
DAMN those newer Razars are crazy fast and handle well. My buddy has a 1000 cc, 4 seater. Honestly they or should I say the drivers scare me a bit. They can really blast through some of the trails and over the hills but most people dont seem to have much regard to what or who might be around the next turn they are taking at 40 mph+ or at the top of the hill they are flying over.
I kept my wife and daughter in the lower section and me in front the first couple of days being the look out for anyone until after 99% of them cleared out on Sunday and we had it pretty much wide open the next couple of days to ourselves.
Ahh here you go, I found a video. The 1st hill climb is Banshee hill and the other one I was talking about they called it the Widow maker. To get an idea how steep it is remember at the bottom is pretty much at sea level then at the top you can see how much higher you are.

Just the view in that ^^ pic shows the steepness - damn!
And the one pic you took of the horizon - is just a tad up there LOL!
Glad you had a good time w/the fam - and especially watching out for other riders - I've almost been in a couple head one like that - luckily the other drivers and I were creeping around the sharp corners etc

Always wanted to ride dunes... I used to race motocross quite a bit when I was younger and sand tracks were fun... but they were a completely different animal than riding dirt. I still have one of my bikes- 2006 RM250. Long live the two stroke!!

Yeah 2 stokes are awesome machines. It's to bad they have phased them out. It has taken a long time for 4 stokes to even come close to the power and only by using 2x the cc. 2 stoke = more power per CC, no radiator, less weight.
Dunes are great but so are trials in the right places. I dont care much for most of the main stream riding areas. I got spoiled riding a lot of off limit riding trails. I have no idea why they are closed because there are 1000s of acres near me that are excellent riding and no damage being done to the natural surroundings.Last edited by lovbyts; 08-11-2015 at 10:06 PM.

It's a shame... Trail riding is almost impossible here... Unless you own land, which we do thankfully. No body wants to hear or see off road vehicles around here. Which is weird because I live out in the country.
