Unstoppable Adware on my PC
My computer has been infected with adware that will not go away. I've used multiple programs that eliminate them but they never go away.
Anyone know good software that will get rid of it?

I've used Malwarebytes, Spybot, HitmanPro, and SpyHunter and none of them go rid of the one that keeps popping up. I just tried SUPERAntiSpyware and so far it's worked, but the adware has a habit of showing up after a little while.

I think I know the one you mean. If you can not do a system restore back at least a couple weeks before it showed up don't waste your time fighting it. Format and reload. Trust me you will be sorry if you don't.

On a serious note, a combo of Ad-aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Malwarebytes anti-malware, and CCleaner have never steered me wrong.
Malwarebytes tends to be the one that can get the real bad stuff.

Type msconfig in the search bar and hit enter, go to startup and disable any services you do not want to run on startup, review the services tab as well, be sure to select hide all microsoft services . Go to uninstall programs and look for any funky names such as grocerygetter or something like that, typically adware programs have funny names. If IE is your default browser then reset all IE settings in the options. If you use chrome, go the settings and check your extensions as well as search engine. Next I would advise going through the registry but if you are not computer savvy than I do no recommend it.
Anyone that advises reformatting a computer due to adware does not know what they are doing. The only time you should ever have to reformat your pc is if you get the FBI or cryptolocker virus depending on the severity or due to other technical issues. I have removed both from multiple computers, a reformat is only a last resort.
You should also consider how you got it in the first place. I do not run AV on my machine and I have never had a virus. Most people either open an email/ attachment, click on a link/ad, or are going to questionable sites to begin with such as porn, torrents, etc.Last edited by jnewton86; 08-16-2015 at 06:09 PM.

If it's the one I'm thinking of I can guarantee these will make no difference. I went to school for my A+, MCSE and CCNA and built computers, servers and did IT for several years and there is one particular adware program that even after several days of trying everything you mentioned, everything I could think of and tweaking the registry I could not get rid of it 100%
After running into this a couple of times and wasting for to much time if I could not get the system restore to work which it would not unless I caught it early then I found it's a LOT quicker to just format and reload the OS.
Really? If it's simple adware I agree but I know of one that as I have said I have done all that and more. Yes what you mention does work with a lot of them and that is/was one of the first things I did but there is one (I dont remember the name) that is a real B*tch and I have read on several forums at the time everyone (Tech gurus) said the same, format because they also wasted a LOT of time.Last edited by lovbyts; 08-17-2015 at 06:46 AM.

I've been running windows 8.1 and got that same browser hijacker malware. could not get rid of it short of a reformat. what ticks me is that my anti virus anti spyware anti malware did not catch it. I'm running Kaspersky Antivirus, spyware, malware. well needless to say i will never use them again. but norton slows down my computer so I don't like it. but anyways I did get rid of the malware and not by reformat. instead Windows being the nice company that they are (puke) um well they invited me to download their brand new windows 10 for absolutely free! wow what a great deal. I upgraded it last night to 10. they don't let you download it to a disk to save for later installation, once you click on download it automatically installs directly on your computer. but anyways once the upgrade was done firefox was upgraded to windows 10 as well and that deleted the malware. However now that I have windows 10 in less than 24 hours later, they have already sent updates to fix issues and block intruders.

Already tried Malwarebytes and it didn't work... it's looking more and more like I will have to go with the formatting route, but I will be trying everything first. My external hard drive that I bought for the purpose of backing things up broke a while ago so I want to make sure I've tried everything first.

When you put stuff into a search engine, does it try using another search engine? Are you prevented from going to certain sites?
Have you tried a system restore? There are certain things you can do as this has happened to me but in the end I just stopped using FireFox, erased as much shit as was possible and downloaded Chrome and had no issues.

Yours you should be able to fix by going into add-ons or options (dont remember which) and either removing that tool bar add-on or uncheck the search engine being used such as ASK.com
Another place is if's an actual program remove it in control panel. Sometimes when you download a free program it comes with add-ons you dont realize such as additional tool bars for browsers or download managers. Another one that gets downloaded all the time is McAfee. DONT use it, especially the free one. It sucks, it will slow down your PC and is pretty much bloatware itself.
system restore does work most of the time unless it's the BAD one I'm thinking of and it will only work if you catch it right away, 1 day or less and haven't rebooted. If you (Hoggage) have had it for a while and rebooted then your system restore wont work either.
