    Gym in Vancouver, Canada?

    Hi,

Moved to Vancouver, BC (Canada) a few years back and been lucky to have a pretty decent gym at work so no need to pay for a membership so far.

Wondering if anyone around have some personal experience to share and/or recommendations?

So far, it seems like the options are:

    - Community Centres. Seems pretty cheap, decent depending on the location, no BS contract.
    - Steve Nash's. Went to see a couple and what shocked me is how busy they are. Seriously, PACKED with a lot of r-tards that don't seem to understand the concept of lifting. They are a bit pushy on the membership. You can go from 1 location to another depending on the level of your membership.
    - Club 16. More or less the same experience as Steve Nash's but at least, it seems a bit cheaper. I like the concept of being able to go from one location to another (it seems)
    - Anytime Fitness: I like the concept of the 24/7 (not that I would ever go for a 1am workout) but price is a bit more hence less crowded. Not super impressed with the equipment though but still an ok option.
    - Gold's Gym. Passed by that one today for the first time. It's in Burnaby. I didn't have much time to go in but it looked pretty big. Not sure about their pricing as well.
    - Goodlife Fitness: Seems like it's out since the only location in Vancouver is now for Women only. they probably got sick of meatheads hitting on them. lol
    - Spartacus Gym: Seems like an independent Gym. Prices are reasonable and on a month to month basis it seems.

ya, that's the plan. Not sure if the rules on the forum are allowing me to post prices but I'll provide an update for sure. Hopefully, some Vancouverites can jump in with their own experience.

Quick update. Just went to see Spartacus Gym on Commercial Drive and I have to say I'm impressed at the honesty. It's definitely refreshing to see a place with no BS. Got there and straight got to the price per month, the commitment (4 months to start). Got to see the gym as well. Equipment is old school and bare bone. No BS once again.

Certainly, I could pay less for Club 16 and have newer fancy equipment but free weight is free weight after all. Considering this as an option and will give it a try during peak hour.

Before that, I'll go to Gold's Gym and see how it feels.

Good to keep your options open before deciding

I wouldn't consider the community gyms as when I was there last time some of them didn't have all the equipment I needed. I went to a bunch just to see if they were different and they more or less had the same equipment, which as I said was limited.

I was a member at Steve Nash gyms before and yeah they're one of the bigger chains that get busy. I think before they were called Fitness World and the military had a thing going on with them where members could go for free. Not sure if that was going on anymore. Good thing is they have multiple locations all over the lower mainland, some better than others. I know exactly what you mean about being pushy with the contracts. They are really annoying about that and have contracts etc.

Been to one Club 16. Was like Steve Nash except smaller and had horrible lighting. It was just dark inside. That being said I was only at one location.

Also Goodlife fitness around Lougheed Town Center is a very well equipped gym and is open 24h but because its on the 2nd floor of a building I'm not sure if they would be ok with you dropping weights if you needed to. Also expensive.

    Look into birdcoop UBC.

Also, if you have the extra money you can consider getting membership at Origins Parkour (Main and 12th). There are some intesnse power lifters that just deadlift for 90 mins. Origins doesn't have a lot of variety - it's mostly for warming up before parkour.

The gay community on Davie street works out at steve nash on Davie and Howe so squat rack, bench press, heavy dumbells etc are free all the time, literally all the time.

I dunno about Van proper, but I bounce between Golds on 200th and 24hr fitness on Fraser Hwy at 188t in Surrey. Both have what I need and neither have pizza night or ring a bell if you grunt too loud...
