    Lets talk about Turbos

I have been reading up a lot lately about them so many options that my mind has melted.

Thinking about upgrading the turbo on my car was thinking a hybrid as I like how mine flows standard and I want to keep the charge cooler too.

I have an ecu and upgraded fuel pump already the car has 540cc injectors which should be plenty for around 300bhp. The car has 250bhp standard as it has been rolling roaded the guy who did the run owns a tuning shop said the engine is good to go for 1 bar of boost. Running 0.85 at the mo.

Lol thanks Clarky haha. I have tried to figure out what I want but theres too much confusion for my liking.

Meant to say the engine is a 3sgtw 4th generation engine and the standard turbo is a ct20b. Also have a 310l per hr fuel pump in it too.

Also I am led to believe that the manifold is a T4 so does this mean if I a turbo with a T4 flange will it just bolt on using the standard mani??

I used to be a mechanic many years ago lol but you have lost me haha it was transits and mercs i worked on though diesel.
My wee bro had a wee starlet a few years back and i kid you not it was a fvcking beast of a wee thing. The fastest thing i have ever been in they are tiny wee thin as you know so that makes a big difference it blew scoobies and some evo's away i can't remember what it was at the wheels or what it was boosting at i'll ask him the mora and let you know.

I think i've still got some pic's i'll have a look and post them if you want mate. The manifold was not the original lol and it had a turbo from subaru in it.

Yeh the ep81 starlet is a beast with a TD04 set up around 200 to 250bhp depending on the boost and fmic in it ha. Friend has a glanza which is a ep91 chassis with 500bhp it is insanely fast 10 second quarter mile car.

Mechanicing is some hard job a lot of friends are but it is tough and tbh under paid

Lets get back to a little basic information. What engine are you putting the turbos on? Single or duals? What do you have now?

540 injectors and upgraded fuel pump are good for a lot more than 300 hp. Ive got 550s with an upgraded fuel pump (Supra 310lph) Hotwire kit, relay bypass with Summit Fuel Pressure Regulator. Two 13g TD04 turbos putting down 400hp at the wheels on a 4 wheel Mustang dyno.

I'm sure you are going to also upgrade your blow off valve, (HKS) boost controller, (TurboXs).

What are you using for your air/fuel controller now? Depending on how much bigger you are going you may also want to consider upgrading your inner cooler or adding alcohol/water injection but only if you are going considerably larger and plan on 500 hp or more.

Sorry Lb the engine info is mixed into the second post.

I can't really go more than 300fwhp on the stock engine which for me is loads as like your 3000gt the Celica is 4wd.

The engine is a 3sgte, I have a 310l per hr upgraded pump in there, 6 puck clutch, blitz nur spec r exhaust decat and blitz induction kit, forge blow off valve as the standard recirc shit the bed. I have a Hks fcon S ecu to be fitted and an apexi avcr to be fitted. Currently it has a bleed valve on the car. These engines come with a charge cooler as standard which is perfect up to 400bhp.

Looking at some of the forums it looks like a couple popular turbos are CT16 aka Sweet 16, CT20b and Borg Warner s256 turbo. They should be direct drop in. A lot of the other options you need adapters.

Turbo's are nice but I would only do it if it was a designated drag car. For me, supercharger is the way to go for a street application, or daily driver. Not to mention, I love the sound of the exhaust and the performance of my longtubes. A turbo would eliminate and kill all that. My truck is cammed so I love the choking sound at idle.

That, and I don't like to sit there and spool up, lol.

Haha this is turbo so its staying ha.

Modern turbos have little spool tbh they have gone a long way since the early turbos and the 3sgte has a lot of features to reduce spool.

Most of the drop in even though it already has a ct20b have been bored out so they fit a larger wheel and fan design. I'm not up on the tubos like I was at one time since I did my upgrade about 15+ years ago and have not missed with it since. I know my housing is the same as stock, TD04 9b but it has a 13B double fin fan and produces considerably more boost. I'm sure it's the same with the after market c520b's out there. I saw a few dyno charts on the forum and I'm sure on the manufacture websites.

As long as they come from a reputable manufacture, proven speed shop you should be g2g with anything that fits your needs. Just stay away from ebay sellers who only replace the bearing pretending they are new/re-manufactured turbos.

Have you removed your cats yet? I removed my pre and main cats. Passes emission 100% and frees up a lot of power. Sounds much better also.

I agree with Austinite, if I had a NA motor I would go super charger over turbos but since like you my/our engine are designed for turbos from the factory it only makes sense to stick with them.

Damn you DCI!!! you are going to cost me more money... Thanks to your post and comment about your Hks fcon S ecu I did some reading up and like where they are going with the tunable ECU for my car, Chrome ECU. It would eliminate a lot of little issues that creep up and make it much more tunable via Flash.

I think I'm going to hold off until spring though and spend more time reading up but it seems to be a good product. I could finally make use of my high volume ProM Maf I have had sitting on the shelf for 10 years also.

Bahaha our hobbies are expensive aren't they lol. Those chrome ecus are very good my hks is only a basic piggy back but should be more than enough for my needs at the moment. I don't really want anymore bhp that 300 tops.

I think a hybrid is the way to go I just neeed to understand what specs I want to get the power I need reliably.

Damn you again DCI... Now I'm looking at new headers and different turbos.. Of course I would need new piping and FMIC... I CANT go down that rabbit hole, not yet. lol

I was thinking I'm getting close to my 60K service and started looking at adjustable timing gears also. They make a pretty cool clear timing gear covers.

Actually I think I will be smart and do it the right way. Even though my motor is fine and I only have a little over 100k I think I will find a good block and build it up from the ground. Its been a long time since I actually built an engine. Ill build it on the stand with headers and turbos all assembled. Something like this.

Lol what you thinking?? Turbo tech has moved a lot since the TDO4 series and theres a lot less lag with the modern turbos.

Get a set of HKS ones they looks class in their anodised purple colour.
