The doctor (a different one, since the first one left and apparently just dropped all her pending work) tells me that everything is good, except that my H&H is elevated.
I look at the screen, and my hematocrit was 48%. Not that high, so I play dumb and let him Google "high hematocrit". He then comes up with the term "polycythemia" and starts reading me the webMd bullet points on it :/
He tells me that it's probably nothing to worry about, but that he "wouldn't be doing his job" if he didn't diagnose me with polycythemia and write me a referral to a hematologist. I then notice that the blood result form has me listed as a female.
Me- "Uhhh...wait. They have me listed as a female."
Him:" oh yeah, that was the lab's mistake"
Me: "Well, that explains the problem, since the male ranges go up to 52 or 54%, depending on the lab"
Him:"Yeah, you're probably right. That makes sense..."
Me: "So if this was a misunderstanding based on a lab error, do you think we could just scratch off that diagnosis and forget about the hematologist?"
Him: "Well, I already put it in, and it can't hurt to get a second opinion from a specialist"
Fucking unbelievable.
That's f-in unacceptable. Damn good thing you are in the medical field. It's cretins like that who run up healthcare costs through the roof. Hematologists generally go full bore with their testing as well and some of the genetic testing was fairly expensive for me. Weird that the lab put your gender down as female. I thought they generally operated off the lab orders and patient info provided by the Dr.?
