Angry Just had my mind blown at the Dr's office...

I decided 5 months ago to get set up with a GP that I can see through my work insurance (BCBS HMO). They sent me out for routine blood work and forgot to get back to me...for 5 months. I finally decided to ring them up and come in for the results. The doctor (a different one, since the first one left and apparently just dropped all her pending work) tells me that everything is good, except that my H&H is elevated.

I look at the screen, and my hematocrit was 48%. Not that high, so I play dumb and let him Google "high hematocrit". He then comes up with the term "polycythemia" and starts reading me the webMd bullet points on it :/

He tells me that it's probably nothing to worry about, but that he "wouldn't be doing his job" if he didn't diagnose me with polycythemia and write me a referral to a hematologist. I then notice that the blood result form has me listed as a female.

Me- "Uhhh...wait. They have me listed as a female."
Him:" oh yeah, that was the lab's mistake"
Me: "Well, that explains the problem, since the male ranges go up to 52 or 54%, depending on the lab"
Him:"Yeah, you're probably right. That makes sense..."
Me: "So if this was a misunderstanding based on a lab error, do you think we could just scratch off that diagnosis and forget about the hematologist?"
Him: "Well, I already put it in, and it can't hurt to get a second opinion from a specialist"

    Fucking unbelievable.

obamacare strikes again.. there are no good doctors left, just nurse practitioners with ipads.

my daughter's pediatrician recommended whole milk with bovine growth hormone in it, and flintstones vitamins with food dye. needless to say we've never been back. three years later she's never been to the doc again, we treat everything with silver, and proactive with organic food and probiotics. knock on wood. (we had a get a physical for school, we just do urgent care for any needs. doctors are drinking tap water too, i guess)

I started scratching my head after you mentioned a 5 month delay (why didn't you check earlier BTW?) and when you said the doctor had to google your diagnosis. Something is wrong here.

Yeah, sometimes its fun to play dumb, but have to say that also found excellent doctors who knew what they were talking about.

Theres good and bad everywhere I guess.

Good lord. Probably tens-of-thousands have suffered under that Dr.'s advice.

I have witnessed docs youtubing procedures before they do them. Be aware people: "Trust your team, but question everything"

I kinda figured they were either going to tell me I'm fine, or I'd run into some stupid shit like this (but less stupid). I'm also a horrible procrastinator.

Scary to think that this would occur in the medical profession, but it is a reality. When I went to have my hips replaced I knew which surgeon had the better track record in terms of his results. The same will hold true when I get my RC repaired.

Haven't worked in the profession for years now, but I've seen more than a few that are there to just get paid and who's effort & interest is almost non-existent.

That's f-in unacceptable. Damn good thing you are in the medical field. It's cretins like that who run up healthcare costs through the roof. Hematologists generally go full bore with their testing as well and some of the genetic testing was fairly expensive for me. Weird that the lab put your gender down as female. I thought they generally operated off the lab orders and patient info provided by the Dr.?

    What a joke

From my last handful of MD runs ins, this is the conclusion I form also - they, are like crappy mechanics - well, I guess we might as well replace it.

No fvcking bull shit, after being into this whole self health, juicing lifestyle - I have not had anything at all a MD has added that I already did not know about.

Well, let's pull BW - it looks fine = you're just fine

Just like mentioned above, another profession tainted by BS schooling. Well, they have the degree, they must know their shit - yeah, right

Do you know what they call a Doctor who finished at the bottom of his class just barely graduating? Doctor.... Thats why it's always good to not just blindly take what they say as gospel.

As Clarky said - Dont even bother with most UK doctors. I look at it this way though, my Doctor is a General Practitioner (GP) - His job is to refer me to a specialist, or prescribe basic medications. Hes a jack of all trades, but a master of none.

People whinge about the NHS over here, but if you're seeing your GP, I always go slightly armed. Im by no means a TRT specialist, but I went in there knowing what to ask for, and what I wanted. And in fact there was a little relief in my GPs eyes, because it cut out the stage where he has to pretend to know what to look for.

That is kinda funny and sad though Bona!
