    Glass Food Storage

Slowly making the switch of removing all my plastic food storage containers and going to glass. Can't seem to find anything of substance that clearly explains the difference of the dollar store brand vs a big company like Pyrex. I noticed at the dollar store some containers say BPA free on the packaging while other containers (from the same brand, in a different size) do not.

For those that use glass, what has been your experience?

How many use dollar store brand or big name brand?

    Thanks ^_^

I find with the cheaper ones the issue is the tops, I like to re-heat (microwave at work) with the top on because it keeps the moisture but after a few times the tops dont fit right anymore. I bought the better brands and dont have that issue as much.

Side note.....If I were to end up having cancer (I pray not!) it would be from eating out of plastic. Ive been doing it for 5 days ew for 20 years, I can remember the old stuff melting, having bubbles, tomato sauce staining them red........a big regret I wasnt smarter........and my sister said something about it from the very beginning.

What brand do use you BG? So far I've seen Pyrex, Rubbermaid, Mainstays (Walmart brand), and a brand I forget but the logo is an anchor.

Pyrex and I just pop the lid slightly when warming up.

Kind of interested myself. After a while plastic containers pick up the taste of the foods that have been in them, which isn't an issue with good glass containers.
My lunchbox is plenty big to hold some good glass containers, so if someone has a brand they prefer, I'll snag some on Amazon or something.
Like BG, I've been eating from plastic containers for decades, so the damage is done, but it would be nice to switch to glass just for the improvement in food taste.
There are 3 loves in my life: my wife, my English mastiffs, and my weightlifting....Man, my wife gets really pissed when I get the 3 confused...

That is exactly why I want to switch and economically they last longer so less $$$ over time. Most people have recommended Pyrex so far. At $7.00 per container, times 4-5 meals times 7 days, goodbye wallet.

Awesome on making the switch .
I avoid all plastics as much as possible. Glass pitchers, containers, jars you name it.
I use anchor hocking as well as Pyrex. Glass is essentially made the same way with silica. They state BPA free for marketing, but there is no Bisphanol in the lids anymore. I buy a nice set at Costco where the lids seal where liquid cannot escape. Lids are plastic still ,but sometimes I use a paper towel to barricade as well as never closing the lid on hot food/liquids.
While your at it,switch to cast iron pans if havn't already done so.

Real happy since getting cast iron pans, little learning curve but now it’s great.

Mrs. AG grew up cooking on cast iron, but it was a bit of a leap for me to get right. Food flavors are much better though. Defo can put a better sear on foods.

I use anchor/Pyrex. The annoying thing I find is the lids don’t cross brands so you have to make sure you’re grabbing the right one... obviously a minor issue but if I were to do it again I’d buy just one brand

Yes, cast iron is the way to go. They cook more even once they get up to temp. No hot spots

Been cooking with cast iron forever. Walmart was only $1.00 more than Amazon so I picked up 3 containers today, giving me a total of 6. Think I will just buy 1 per weekly Walmart visit until I get to 20

I'm so hard on my stuff should've switched to glass ages ago, night and day difference in quality.

Try blackening fish with 1" of bacon grease in pan!

Most of them at walmart are bpa free. I just bought another 25 containers this weekend
I use the cheap ones and throw them away every few months when they start getting bad.
