    Sleep Apnea

I've had sleep apnea for many years and I feel like it's staring to effect my overall health. I've been waking up panting with elevated heart rate most mornings around 4:30am. This out of breath feeling carries over into my 5:00am workout which is why I feel it's time to resolve. Anyone on here dealing with this condition and what are you doing medically to manage it? Hoping to get options other than the forced O2 masks. Not sure I could sleep like that.

I've heard CPAP machines can be found fairly cheap via Craigslist, Kijiji, etc.
I no longer check my inbox. If you PM me I will not reply.

Yes but you have to do a sleep study to see what pressure works best for you. They will change it and monitor throughout the night. It’s quite a study. Wires hooked up to your head chest and legs.

I’m pretty sure I have some form of it also

But, I strongly doubt that I can sleep with something on my face that looks like a respirator off a plane

Do you do any cardio? It does wonders for my breathing, when I do it, which is not often.

Put a little hair on it and make it smell like vagina and you'll be just fine.

If you think you will have a problem sleeping with a mask, look into the newest device called Inspire. It's an implanted device just under the skin in the chest with a wire going up to your tongue. It provides stimulation (shock that cannot be felt) when you quit breathing that causes you to involuntarily swallow which naturally opens your airway. Most insurances now cover it.

Not trying to make a big deal out another health topic, but some of the stuff that gets discussed online here is simply significant in terms of how it can affect one’s health and a bunch of bro science is just going to prolong the inevitable of not getting treatment, minimizing it, etc.

Sleep apnea is serious. Just because it doesn’t cause any noticeable effects (other than drowsiness, fatigue) doesn’t mean it isn’t detrimental to your health. Untreated sleep apnea increases risk (it’s almost a promise) that you’ll get pulmonary hypertension. Read up on it. It’s the beginning of a permanent downhill for your health. And it’s pretty silent, just like hypertension, until it’s too late.
Again, not trying to be an alarmist, but as one who actually works in an areas of these issues, I see the end results and believe me, it isn’t pretty. If you’re 16 and invincible I get it. But if not there’s no excuse not to take care of your health so you can have quality of life when older and stay the frik around for your kinds and grandchildren. The solutions for so many of these things are so simple and easy it’s ridiculous.
I’m always open for a pm if anyone has a question about stuff like this.

    things like
    - chronic sleep apnea
    - chronic high blood pressure
    - chronic high blood sugar
    - chronic inflammation

these all lead to pretty much every disease and health problem society has (cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes) and ultimately death .

they key word they all have is "chronic" and thats what everyone should be attempting to treat or prevent.

there is acute and temporary inflammation thats going to happen , especially with AAS use and bodybuilding. the muscle building process requires muscle break down resulting in inflammation. this should be acute. when things become chronically inflamed we get health issues.

there is acute and temporary high blood sugar that happens because of diet and or drug use.. (like HGH use that raises blood sugar to pre diabetic range) , this is more pronounced especially with AAS use and bodybuilding. again this should be acute (like when your on a high carb diet and HGH usage phase). when things become chronic we get health issues. when high dosing HGH our blood sugar is supposed to go up. but when we come off of HGH and have a normal diet and your blood sugar is chronically elevated, this is a problem.

    - same with high blood pressure. acute and temporary high blood pressure is normal. wither its from your exercise programming and all the heavy squatting, or from your 3 week blast of 100mg of Dbol a day. blood pressure is going to go up. but it should NOT stay that way. its supposed to be a temporary thing as your body acclimates. 2 weeks after your powerlifting meet and your BP is chronically elevated, you got problems

    - Sleep Apnea .. yes there is temporary acute sleep apnea. you can get sleep apnea exaggerated from a night of drinking alcohol. then return to normal . if your 180 pound guy with no sleep apnea at all .. then you get on a heavy bulking cycle and put on a good 25 pounds of mass and water retention and develop sleep apnea at the peak of that bulk. that is likely temporary. if you get a sleep study during the end of that bulk the doctors will say you have sleep apnea.. yet after a cut and a depletion phase your magically 'healed' . reason is that sleep apnea too can be a temporary thing that your body just needs to acclimate to and then get over as you put on more weight.
now, when you get to a point where your so heavy that even when your not bulking and not retaining water that you still have sleep apnea, then you've got to the point where its a chronic condition and needs to be treated.

with all this stuff we need to analyze whats going on and what the cause is and take the proper measures to make sure these things don't become chronic and do what we need to in treating them

I am in the process of trying to correct this issue myself. I stopped breathing pretty bad a few times about a month ago. Enough the second time that I actually went to the ER. Well I did the sleep study and I stop breathing an average of 31 times an hour, so the VA set me up with a CPAP.
I got fitted last Friday, they offered me 3 different masks. Little things that seal the end of your nose, a nose mask, or full nose/mouth mask. I tried the nose mask and have found that I can't exhale against the pressure and start to feel suffocated. The longest I have made it is about two and a half hours in the past 3 nights. The machine I have has Exhaust Pressure Relief (EPR) and a ramp up feature that allows me to set it to a low pressure until it thinks I am asleep then it will ramp up the pressure. You have to keep your mouth shut or the pressure releases through your mouth.
I just called the VA to see if I can get a different mask, I hope that will help. My next step will be to use the machine for maybe an hour before bed watching TV so that I get more used to it before trying to go to sleep. Sucks I really want to see what I will feel like the next day if I could actually get a good night of sleep.

I’m going through a similar thing right now. Did part of the sleep study. It was supposed to be all night and most of the next day. The night time part was to test for sleep apnea. The day time is to test for narcolepsy.

I couldn’t get both days off work so I did the night time one where you basically just sleep for 8 hours while being monitored. It turns out I don’t have sleep apnea. Most likely I have narcolepsy. Symptoms are extreme fatigue at times and being able to fall asleep super easy at the worst times like driving especially or even reading my daughters good night story.

Anyways the point is it’s no biggie to do the sleep study and it will help a lot with the diagnoses and treatment.

Do you know the plan for your sleep study?

My mom has serious sleep apnea, like deathly serious. She just got that breathing device and looking like a damn cyborg.
It is def a condition you want to do everything to resolve in any way you can, even if it's uncomfortable, and you wanna do it now.

In my mom's case, it happend because of her weight and bad diet, she drinks a lot of wine too which the doc says is ok, but I don't.
So far it has given her depression, irritability, anger, very high blood pressure, "small" heart attack, painful headaches and problem with one eye.
Granted, all of them might be for other reasons than the apnea, but apnea sure doesn't help.

Best of luck bro! And as previously mentioned, don't go by bro-science on this.
