Anybody here live in Nassau County, NY?

My girl lives out there, and they outlawed plastic grocery bags. they let stores charge you 5¢ for paper if they want. unlike NYC and suffolk county, they did not mandate the 5¢ charge for paper bags, they left it up to the individual store to decide.

Growing up, every store gave you your groceries in FREE paper bags, nobody charged for that. Now they claim it is too cost prohibitive to do that. bullshit. they did it for 150 years. these stupid fascist environmental groups actually got business onboard with their craziness, and now i cant even get paper bags to pack my old newspaper in to put it out for recycle nights.

Does anyone know which supermarkets in nassau county offer free paper bags at the checkout? I get stuck doing shopping with her so i get what i like, and i cant bring myself to pay 5¢ a bag for paper bags.

You actually get used to it. They sell reusable plastic for $.10. It doesn’t bother me at all anymore. You will find that you were using a lot of bags you didn’t need.
The reason they stopped in Cali was for the environment.

The legislators in Nassau county specifically said no new taxes. They will not mandate a 5 cent on paper bags. But the grimy local store charges it anyway. I would love to support a store that doesn’t cave in to the environmental fanatics.

I am assuming they are just recovering the cost of the bags? Does not sound more complicated than that to be honest.

Shell out a couple of bucks for the reusable grocery bags and keep them in your car, or pay the nickel each time ya cheap ass.

Plastic bags are bad for the environment...period. It’s not about “fascist environmental groups” (remove your tinfoil hat) it’s that they end up everywhere and have been proven to have a negative environmental impact. There’s actually evidence that shows that brown paper bags are bad for the environment too. The manufacturing of them takes an environmental toll and they don’t break down and recycle like their advertised too. It’s not about being an environmental nut, it’s about being conscientious about reducing our impact on the only home we have.

You have money for roids, fried chicken and candy...surely you can scrounge up a dollar or two for some reusable bags.

Not saying we need to hold hands and sing kumbaya, but decreasing plastic bags and bottles is pretty easy. I’m a big time fly fisherman and I’m tired of seeing all that shit in my once pristine rivers.

    Roll coal all you want...

No, they are not. they are donating the money collected for the bags to some environmental group. if they kept it, i could see it.

the point is that we all grew up getting bags free with supermarket purchase. all of a sudden now we have to pay for them.

the issue is that you then always have to go out and replace the reusable bags in the trunk of the car. shopping is an impulsive activity for me. im driving past a store and i decide to go in. why should i have to go outside and replace bags in my trunk everytime i shop? such bullshit.

paper bags recycle great. we always loaded them up with the week's newspaper and put them out at the curb every week on recycle day. no issues.

Not sure I understand what you are saying so I'll ask a question. Do you mean that you forget to bring the bag into the store and then have to go out and get it after you are done shopping?

The good thing is that you have a choice to shop somewhere else if you disagree with their policy. Sounds easy enough.

Hence the point of this thread.

Now that you made an observation recapping the whole point of me asking my question, by chance do you have a suggestion for a local place?

Can't say I do I have always chosen Wegmans over anything else and also lived in places where I have had to use re-usable fabric bags for the last 10-years. I never really found it to be very inconvenient once I got used to it.

We have a handful of supermarket chains here, I am in the midst of trying to find who gives out the paper bags without charging.

considering a bulk package of toilet paper is now 160$ .. paying 5 cents for paper bags seems like a heck of a deal . heck you can probably wipe with both sides

Your lucky is just toilet paper and paper towels!!! Here in SoCal, stores are empty- little meat, no chicken, limited veggies, limited fruit.
I went to 4 stores and couldn’t find a freaking onion.
No chicken breast, no tuna, etc
Stores are closing early and opening late.
Fucking police escort TP trucks. LOL
