Training after prp injection
After two years of suffering with golfers elbow and tricep tendinosis, I have finally found a Dr that seems willing to help. He specializes in arm/elbow and shoulder treatment. I met with him for the first time last week. My previous dr had me on all kinds of anti inflammatory medications that did nothing. I have done physical therapy and that of course was useless. I have had xrays and an mri. I have also tried 12 sessions of laser therapy.... total waste of $700.
Right off the bat this new dr gave me a cortisone injection in my forearm and they are going to try to get prp injections approved through my insurance for both my forearm and tricep. If they dont get approved, this clinic only charges $500 for prp injections which is awesome.
I have been out of the gym more than I have been in it for the past couple years, training on and off due to my tricep.
I am dying to start a cycle to give myself something positive to focus on. I’m hoping to have the injections done within the next month or two depending on when they can schedule me.
Obviously I will discuss this with my dr and see what his recommendations are, but from everything I have read, you can resume physical activity within a couple days post injection. What have you guys that have had prp injections done as far as training after the injection?

On Wednesday I had the cortisone injection in my forearm (on the inner side of my forearm where the tendon attaches at the elbow) and it is still very sore, but I returned to work after the injection and continued to work the rest of the week, even though he gave me a note taking me out of work until Monday, if I felt I needed to stay home. I probably would have taken the days off if I hadn’t just recently been out of work for five weeks for family leave after we had our child.

I'm pretty sure Kel did his normal work activities post-injection, but things like lifting up a cup of coffee were a tad uncomfortable. Also, I think he avoided Nsaids and took it easy on shoulder/ chest work for a few days.
Might want to ask him to make sure I have the details correct. He had tear in his anterior head, I believe. There are 3 loves in my life: my wife, my English mastiffs, and my weightlifting....Man, my wife gets really pissed when I get the 3 confused...

Yeah I have read that you need to discontinue anti inflammatory medicine before and for a awhile after. But I stopped using them a while ago as they do nothing for me. I think I’m going to say screw it and start my cycle tonight... I’m tired of waiting and I need something positive to focus on.

The cortisone pain/discomfort will dissipate quickly. I just had 3 shots in each shoulder but Im just like you, I have some sort of arm issue, nothing but narc-pain meds work. Im interested in seeing how you do, keep us updated.

I’ll try to remember to pm you with an update on how I’m feeling a few weeks after I get the prp injections. He said surgery is about 85% successful in correcting my golfers elbow issue, I’m hoping i won’t need it though. Like I said earlier that laser therapy was a complete waste of money. I’m hoping I won’t say the same thing about these prp injections. But if this doesn’t fix it... I have no idea what is left to do... I don’t know how or what they could do surgically for my tricep.
I’m tired of waiting so I will start my cycle now and just train through it, I’ve given it plenty of time to rest/heal with no improvement so I might as well get back to work in the gym. Hopefully I will notice an improvement at some point after the injections.Last edited by yeahbuddy289; 10-18-2020 at 04:26 PM.

Please keep this thread current.
I am very interested in how this goes for you.
A friend of mine was told by his doctor to try stem cell therapy for $900.
Not sure how it culd be so cheap...
I told him to ask about PRP injections.
I do know that many high ranked powerlifters have gone the PRP route and claim it helps.
Larry Wheels, Kevin Oak, etc..
I've heard and read too many bad things about cortisone to try it.
It is possibly degenerative to the tendons and ligaments...

....X2 on keeping the thread updated.
Edit: FWIW, Class IV laser work didn't help a lot, just a tad. I found an IR lamp worked about as well and was much cheaper than the laser therapy.Last edited by almostgone; 10-18-2020 at 04:46 PM.

I’m very glad I went to this new clinic and saw a dr who specializes in elbow/arm treatment for a second opinion. They are a larger practice than where I was previously going and I would have thought they would have been more expensive for things like prp but I was happily surprised when he told me what they charge.
I will update this thread after I get the injections. I’m hoping it will give me some relief sooner than later but I believe it will take weeks, possibly months considering how long I have had this problem.
I am not a fan of cortisone injections either. He recommended one for my forearm, which I did. I did have one in my shoulder a few years ago and it really did help and I have had no adverse effects from it. Both drs I have seen will not do one in the tricep as it is a smaller tendon and there is a higher risk for it becoming weaker and actually tearing.

Hey guys just wanted to update the thread... I finally got a PRP injection in my tricep on December 23. They took a pretty large amount of blood to spin down in the machine... a lot more than I thought they would. Man let me tell you that it wasn’t that fun. Idk if it’s the same in other body parts but my tricep felt so full durning the injection and literally two minutes after I could not move my arm and it was very painful. It took 2-3 days for the pain to subside. He said I could expect a pretty good bruise on the area from the blood being injected but I had no bruising at all. I hope I get some relief from this but I just don’t see it healing from this if my body couldn’t naturally heal it over the course of a year. But here’s hoping.

I got PRP in my small rotator cuff tear. It seems to have helped.
I didn’t experience any pain from the injection.
They withdrew maybe 10ccs of blood and i injected maybe 2.5ccs of platelets back into me.

The amount of blood they took from me was very close to the amount they take when you donate. It was the biggest syringe I’ve ever seen in my life they filled. The injection was give with a 10ml syringe but it was probably no more than 2.5-3mls. Terribly painful.. maybe because the elbow joint isn’t very “meaty”. My beater car is a stick shift and I was having a hard time getting it home lol thank god it was mostly highways lol
