Thread: Sodium Hyaluronate

    Sodium Hyaluronate

    Just doing some researching...

So yesterday I got my first of three knee injections of Orthovisc (sodium hyaluronate).
I have an arthritic knee and the gel injections are supposed to help with the pain.

    Long story short...
The three injection course runs about $3500.
Supposedly the pain relief lasts maybe 6 months.

The only reason I could afford it is because my family reached our family $6000 deduction limit so everything is now free.
So... it is not something I see myself able to get every year for the rest of my squatting life.

    Anyway...
I see that on the interwebs I can get the veterinary version of it for about $300.

    Just has my mind spinning...

I have also started looking at some online international web places to see if it is available.

Gonna go to the pharmacy and see if I even need a prescription... I'm sure I do.

Seems like Kel had Synvisc injection(s) and also Zilretta. The volume of the Zilretta injections blew my mind, but I was thinking that the Ortho guided the injections via ultrasound? Keep in mind I'm old, so my memory isn't always on track.

I feel you on getting on getting as much healthcare done/ meds refilled as possible when you hit your deductible.

If obtained yourself how would you inject it and know you're hitting the mark exactly?

    I know I know...

    Watched her yesterday...
She didn't guide it in with ultrasound like she did with the PRP on my rotator cuff.

    She injected 3ccs.
And is going to do 2 more shots of 3ccs each.

I imagine it moves throughout the joint.

Just can't imagine spending that much money every year.

But yeah... it probably isn't the smartest idea.

But damn... Walmart even has the stuff...

Have you or anyone else ever injected peptides into your knee?

I haven't. I had the HA shots at least 3 times now and the Zilretta twice. Had the HA series just last month actually.
I wonder if you spoke to the doc about the cost if they would even consider using a product you provide and just charging you the office visit / service charge. Probably highly unlikely due to liabilities, etc. but hell, I'd ask anyway.

My ortho doesn't use use ultrasound for my knees either. Must be a pretty easy spot to hit for them.

I'm still amazed at the volume of the injections.

    So a brief update...

Had my round of 3 gel injections in my knee...

My first squat workout I worked up to 2 singles at 225.
    Pain the next day.
    I was pissed and depressed.

    About a week later I hits 225x5x3 and 275x5.
    No pain the next day.

    About a week later I hit 225, 275, 295, 315 x5
    No pain the next day.

For reference I usualy hit a top set single near 500 most workouts.

I think I will be able to compete again!!!

    Anyway...
I just tried ordering the pet version online and all 4 sites wanted my vet's info or a prescription.
(want to inject my other knee and also try maintainence doses)

Contacted safe meds for all but they don't carry it.

    Alibaba has some.
Do they ship to the US?

    Any other ideas??

No idea about any of this, but I would stay away from competing or pushing yourself too hard. You only get two knees and you’ll hopefully need them for the next 30-40 years. Being able to walk without pain seems like a better deal than winning a competition. I’ll admit that I’ve never competed in bodybuilding or powerlifting, so I’m speaking from a purely civilian standpoint.

Sounds like you got some benefit from the shots.

DD I agree with TM on this one. I struggle big time not pushing the weight up. I mean I still go quite heavy for reps, compared to most I guess but I'm not doing super heavy stuff for low reps anymore. I also almost never squat first anymore. The focus is on a shorter ROM and slower reps on all leg work anymore.

And yes, about a week after the 3rd shot it kicks in big time. If you ever get the opportunity to try Zilretta you won't believe it. The next day after the shots (one shot only @ 5ml) it feels like brand new knees. Scary actually.
