Thread: Why is my strength so disproportionate between squat, bench, deadlift?

Question Why is my strength so disproportionate between squat, bench, deadlift?

I'm probably not built for bench but I feel like it's severely lagging. I'm 6'2" with decently long arms and 220 pounds. My best stats before taking test was 500lb x 3 squat, 615 lb deadlift and 295 bench. I've tried training bench in a lot of different ways but the gains come slow. Anybody got any suggestions? I seem to get it off my chest ok but my sticking point is when my elbow is at 90 degrees. Maybe not generating enough pop off the chest to power through?

I have similar issues 80” reach and 6’2”. Not ideal for maxing bench press but I have managed 395lbs before. I like hammer strength machines for chest now. I just find the flat bar all the way down puts the shoulders at an ackward angle. I haven’t tried to Max my bench in a long time.

Bench has never been my strong point, at least in the traditional sense. I find dumbbell bench presses more rewarding than barbell. Being able to twist your wrists while also allowing more range of motion in general is why I do it. Most people cannot handle heavy dumbbells. I don’t know, but to me, pressing 120 lb dumbbells is more impressive than 315 on the bar.

But if you really want to improve your regular bench, reduce your range of motion while arching your torso a bit, keeping shoulders flat on the bench and your shoulder blades pinched together. Bring your elbows closer to your side and press from your torso instead of your shoulders. Scott Mendelson explains it pretty well:

I’m 6’3” and have really long arms and not built for the bench either due to my long ROM, however I have strong triceps and they bail me out quite a bit. I have a pretty solid BP.

Work your triceps - a lot of the time they’re the difference in that sticking point. I like lots of straight bar pushdowns and long rope pulls with concentration contractions at the top of the rep. Lots of good advice will come your way but IMO, triceps are overlooked

That’s not abnormal. I’m in a similar range at 5’10” and 211 lbs.
    Last I bothered with 1RMs:
    Squat: 495
    Bench: 345
    Deadlift: 575
    Standing Strict Press: 215

These damned gorilla arms and giraffe legs are the bane of my existence in all but deadlift.
