Intake
Question wasn’t getting answered in the dusty diet and nutrition section so I’m posting it here.
I’m sure this question has been answered 1,000 fold but I never asked nor have I ever asked myself if it’s a handicap in my training while aiming for mass.
I get at least my body weight in protein and not sure how much carbs exactly (who’s counting) but I know it’s double the amount of protein give or take any given day. I’m wondering if calories are as critical? I assume I need 4,300 or so a day being that I weigh 218lbs and I’ve only kept track one day which came out to 4400 and that was a busy day at the zoo and not really having food prepped etc it was a “cheat” day I guess since I never really eat junk but that day roughly half of those calories came from cheese danishes and Miller lights ahahahaah!! Regardless I can eat often but not a whole lot each time and some days I really have to make an effort and force feed myself to get my body weight in protein and even more carbs. I’ve read the calories for the food I eat and I can’t see it being possible to eat that much calories each day without puking.
DO CALORIES MATTER THAT MUCH!?!? Or am I good with whatever calories I get from the food I eat to reach my protein and carbs goals? Meat, fish, pasta, bagels at times, eggs, milk, cheeses, shakes, whatever veggies come my way and the occasional cinnamon roll post workout or in the mornings after my workouts etc.
Thanks in advanceLast edited by Marsoc; 03-12-2022 at 08:05 AM. Reason: I’m an asshole

Calories are fuel. If you're having a hard time reaching the amount you feel you need, focus on healthy fats. Fat = 9 cal. per gram, carbs and protein = 4 calories per gram.
Avacados, salmon ( skin on and grilled is one of my favorites), if you can get fresh steelhead, don't overlook it!!! Throw some almonds in. Diets are a constant adjustment for most folks unless you're like Kel and just naturally doing things right based on instinct and experience.
Edit: You're pretty active to require 4,400 calories. I'm not saying you don't, but you definitely aren't sedentary!!Last edited by almostgone; 03-12-2022 at 02:41 AM.
There are 3 loves in my life: my wife, my English mastiffs, and my weightlifting....Man, my wife gets really pissed when I get the 3 confused...

Always to the rescue. Thanks! Heck I’m not sure if I need that many calories, I guessed but I never counted, I just eat regularly every 3 hours or so

Shit, I’m pushing up close to 218 rn - 215 last I checked. . . It’s hard, I’m coming up from 203-205 & I just try to eat everything in sight that’s protein heavy. I don’t count cals(not on paper at least) - but, I shoot for 150-200g’s of protein per day - cals come in at about 3-3.5k(maybe 4k) depending on how clean I eat that day
I’m tryin to get to that 220-225 mark again while still being lean. Best I got to last summer was 210-215 lean, with a 32” waist - arms at just a hair under 19”

Some people can go that route without calculating and just use their mirror for feedback. Whatever works for you is what I'd do. If you feel underfed or think you're missing gains, bump up the calories by 500 or so and see where you land.
It's always to nudge up your fats for calories since they're calorie dense. Just choose the type of fat wisely (within reason). There are 3 loves in my life: my wife, my English mastiffs, and my weightlifting....Man, my wife gets really pissed when I get the 3 confused...

WOW Look at all these hall of famers commenting on my post MAN IM PRIVILEGED!!!! I’m not sure I’ve ever been “lean” except out of highschool. Most I ever weighed was 230 built like a brick shit house, I’d find the prettiest girl at the park, throw her over my back and run up and down the mountains all day.

I came out of BT @ 6'2" and 248 bs and the leanest I'd ever been in my life. Literally had veins @ my obliques but my back wasn't as large as it is now..First thing at next duty station after R&P was a trip to the TMC. Walked in, lieutenant asked why I was there and I told him my weight was outside the army's specs. I ditched my shirt while he grabbed calipers. He came back and gave me the WTF speech. Tried to caliper at my waist and triceps and said...Fvck it! This is bullshit. We need more farm boys like you.

I try and eat the same shit for a week…simplifies things for me. Same time, same food (close anyways)
The next week, I’ll prep again. Rinse and repeat.
Come Sunday. Switch again, then come back to whatever I was doing week 1.
Works for me, just thought I’d share my .2

Thanks, I was thinking about adding in a super greens powder into the diet and yeah I eat basically the same thing for a while then switch it up. I actually counted my calories yesterday and I got to 3,000 calories pretty easily and I still had time for a couple more meals that evening so I guess it’s all doable now that I’ve actually taken note.

Just log it for a week, if you’re eating consistently the same things it’s so easy to gauge. Mix in a shake with oats, nut butter and a banana as well if you need to.
Once you have a quick log, it’s just repetition
Good luck!

I Usually have a shake in the morning to get in my system real fast after sleep then real
Food for a couple meals, maybe a shake every 3rd meal if I’m either A. Lazy and don’t have food prepped or B. Don’t feel like eating. I liked the idea of the clear whey fruity protein I can mix with water and be more refreshing instead of a thick milk shake but I don’t like how it foams up. Like drinking a pure foam.Last edited by Marsoc; 03-14-2022 at 07:06 PM.

Me too, and I am. Moved to Washington, legal now but the weed is crap. Working intake at a jail, she says, "no, I'm just anxious.." I LOLed then too and said with enough mirth to be infectious, between laughs like I was cortling, "bitch, you're high right now." She says, laughing-authentically, with me, "
damn, just lost my train of thought.

I think it should be said that it's not just calories, but the kind of calories. If you're going to tank up at McDonald's and load up on the carbs, but skimp on the protein, you're going to just get fat.
