The only thing that I have heard is that they work in three month increments but like 80 hours a week. And earn something like 50 an hour.

But I agree the 20 years of your life thing is kinda strange. I have no idea how they would proove that.

Repeated diving for long periods of time can take a toll on your body, but I'm not sure about it shortening your life span by 20 years.

It sounds like a job id like, work a couple of weeks then relax. The living standards on a rigg are very high! Probly better then at home hehe!
I know there is a a NO alcohol policy, what about gear? You think they go true your bags?

They don't go through your bags, but there isn't a gym on a rig. Hell you won't have any time to workout if there was. I've been offered numerous times to go work on an oil rig. But I've come to my senses and said no.

I heard differnt bro. My gym owner said they had a better gym on the rigg he worked on (he did some work on the rigg but wasnt imployed by the oil company) then he has now

Well, considering the amount of oil rigs in my area, I've had lots of friends go..

They usually come back after a year or two. Most made great money, but were bored out of their minds and blew most of it on vehicles, booze, etc. In the end, they almost all missed being home.

Lots of money is no good if you can't enjoy it.

Palme, your in Sweden correct? If so the riggs out in your neck of the woods might have a gym. Compaired to the ones in LA I'm sure there a lot bigger. A few guys I know from school worked on them. Something like 2 months on and one month off, flew them back and forth and made silly amounts of cash. However, they busted there a$$. They were all roughnecks so if your diving it might not be as bad, as far as lugging 20' pipes around. A 20 year reduction in ones life span do to repeated diving doesn't sound right, maybe something like 5 would sound realistic. What depth we talking? Would you be breathing mixed air?

Sweden dont have any oilriggs It would be for a English or Norwegian company. Im not sure about the depths...and yeah 20 years sounds alittle to much hehe.
The amount of money they make up weights the risks and hardwork.

I was thinking along the lines of the North Sea, my bad. Sweden with oil rigs, yeah that had to sound strange. HA Any case if I were in your shoes, jmo, I'd hit the high seas! Make as much money as possible then buy all the toys I wanted and settle into a nine to five desk job somewhere.

I used to know a few industiral divers. The horror storries they told are unparalleled. Make excellent money but the risk is higher than you imagine. At the depth and time you'd be under your blood would constantly be saturated with nitrogen. Not to mention the isolation. Most guys on rigs make lots of money because it pays well, and when your working 70+ hours a week and living in the middle of nowhere there really arent any shops around to spend the $$$. Do what you think is right for you bro, but be expecting to bust your ass harder than you ever had if you take this job. It's a serious business and not to be taken lightly.

What the hell is working on a oilrig? What is an oilrig (those things in the middle of oceans that get oil right? Kinda like the prison in the movie "Face Off" where they kept all the prisoners, and their feet were magnetically attached to the floor, that's an oilrig right? Why do you need to dive? Why? How much is the "average" they get paid per hour? Does Canada have these?

hes probably talking about caisson's disease. they monitor people pretty closely now and even though it was true with divers years ago its not really a problem now.

I've known a few people worked on a rig, and I had a friend who did underwater welding. He said the first day he was on the job he saw a guy get torn in half by a pipe. Needless to say he found a new job quickly. The money is good, but I think the 20 years off your life is from accidents that happen. Diving on the rigs is risky from what I've heard.

I meant more along the lines of WHAT you actually have to do. And what they do underwater. I mean you just go there and they train you everything you need to know on the spot? What kinds of THINGS do you do though? And since you're on a rig, you can't go anywhere during your "off" hours, so wtf do you do? Sit in your little cabin and jerk off?

Not an Oil rig, but my friend owns an H2S company..the largest in the state. All he does is sit in his trailer drive a remote control car to the drill platform everyhour with his meter attached and then goes and buys new things with all the money he makes.

roomate sayes the divers for global sante fe make 40 an hour. and the underwater weilders make even more .. .they jsut dive below the ship and weild shit on the rig or fix repairs.

I know here in Australia there are lots of oil and natural gas rigs, i dont know of any diving is involved, i think that'd be pretty specialised. I hear in Australia the only real requirements are that you have a riggers licence, and you can get one of those at our equivalent of night school, and you have to be physically fit. There is NO alcohol no women or anything like that, all guys.

They work 3 weeks on 2 weeks off, and get paid $10,000 a week, yes A WEEK, i guess its highly dangerous. I'm probably going to go coal mining when my IT work dry's up, that pays about $3000-4000 a week, then i'll look into getting into rigging for a year or so, then sit a relax with all my $$ hehe.

But first, you'll fraternize with some geniuses and eccentric roughnecks. At some point after that, you'll go into outer space and save the world...I say go for it.

u will get paid alot but there is a reason for that which is the conditions in which u work in. personally, id rather work at mcdonalds then have to be diving down 1000+ feet in dark water while tryin to fix massive pieces of equipment. maybe its just cause i kind of have a phobia of deep water....
