Best music we've never heard?

The way the music industry works, unless an artist's music makes it to international radio or television, the artist can usually only succeed in their home area. Every region has a band or solo artist that is absolutely amazing but the rest of the world never gets to hear them.

What are the best solo artists and bands in your region that the rest of us should know about?

Excess ... Nothing special now, but for my it was The Hip, Our Lady Peace and The Persuit of Happyness BEFORE they made it big... (well, big... in Canada at least)

I remember seeing the hip at a local festival, they were doing Smalltown Bringdown and really had that "garage band" sound.

Yeah, they're all great. The Tragically Hip still haven't really gained any American success (except for the northeast). I'd love to be a fan that discovered them today and found out that they have so many great albums.

I wanna hear from Palme on this...Sweden has a very talented underground music scene.

I got a ton of Hip bootlegs, the band used to encourage people to record their shows to share with others and even allowed some bootleggers to plug into the soundboard!

Back in the 80's I remember the only way to hear the hip here in Montreal was to get bootlegs or pull out the big antenna and tune in to Ottawa's CHEZ106. Nobody else aired the Hip back then.

Back in Phoenix there was a band called "the format" that was really pickin up but hadn't really gone national yet. Out in hawaii all the music here sounds like ziggy marley humping a ukelele.

They've got a few albums under that name. Their old name, and I'm not lying, was Rainbow Butt Monkeys.

Awesome thread...my contribution, which I'm sure everyone in the NE United States has heard of is Guster. They may have had an actual MTV video or MTV-esque song that garnered enough momentary acclaim for them to be considered one hit wonders, but their stuff is actually all around solid.

A current favorite of mine (their drummer went to the same school as me years before I'd even heard of it) is Hazie Maze...they have sorta a No Doubt sound without the "poppiness". Another band that's been getting major playing time in my rotation right now is Sigur Ros. I'm not entirely sure how they're viewed globally, or even throughout North America (though none of my friends or their friends had heard of them) as they may well be HUGE elsewhere, but the first I heard of them was on the Vanilla Sky soundtrack and i've enjoyed every other song of theirs i've come across.

They totally slay me. Saw them years ago live with Mojo Nixon opening. Listening to their rendition of "Viva LasVegas" now

Paul Wright.... He's big here, well at least in Eugene. He's got some Christian stuff but most of what I've heard isn't. I like it! He's got a new cd comming out at the end of September too... so you might not be able to find much by him yet.

I really didn't like their new album all that much. I jam Greyest and Tip on a weekly basis but was a tad dissapointed in the new output.

Bro Dread Zepplin! Wow! They're F*N Nutz man! I was supposed to see them back in Cali in 93? , but couldn't go! First video I ever saw from them I was on 2 hits of acid! WOW! WTF! Tripping hard to DZ!

I say along those lines I have to go Bob Mould! Hell he's been around since the post punk erra one of the best bands ever, Husker Du! top 50 all time album with Warehouse Song with them, and his solo stuff plus Sugar was awesome! GOtta love the Anti-Pop!

I saw Systematic in May here in Philly they opened for Stonesour. They sound just as good as they do in the studio. Great band!

I know what you mean about not digging some bands but DKL are really good. I would like to get up to NYC and see them but they don't play a lot anymore.

I saw Cradle of Filth (crazy ass Goth) and KSE at Ozzfest this year. I knew about both for awhile and like them a lot. Both put on great shows.

Bro, love goth! Old too Christian Death, Sisters of Mercy, shit like that! I've been diggin on them for a while same with KSE...it's hard for me to find alot bands like that I don't get the time to go to clubs or surf for bands like I used too! We used to go to a club outside of LA called Helter Skelter bro it had bad ass Goth all the time! Loved that joint!
No THere's a few in philly, but I don't fit the mold anymore! Love the music though!

OH,,,,I'd hope YOU heard of Fugazi! Most other haven't though!
