Would you rather be liked or respected?
Any of you want to help me write an essay for a scholarship? It's due November 15th. I'ts actually a pretty hard question. Here it is.... If you had to choose, would you rather be liked or respected? Describe how your choice would impact your treatment from your peers and teachers. So... there's the question... I was thinking about going with respected but I'm not sure. What do ya'll think?

Hmmm, how can you like someone and not respect them? I almost think the two go hand in hand. But then again, I don't like Barry Bonds, but I respect him as a baseball player

I'm not much on helping write papers....but I would rather be respected.....it doesn't matter if someone doesn't like me as long as they show respect then we got no problem.

When you're respected, people ask nothing from you. When you're liked, they feel like you owe them. Respect means everything, being liked comes and goes with the wind.

The problem with this is that it can only apply to a single individual. There is no way that everyone in existence can feel the same way about you... Not everyone will respect you, and certainly not everyone would ever like you.
Also, the degrees of each are dubious at best. If someone doesn't like you, do they dislike you? there are degrees of like, as well as of respect.
If i had to pick between the two, it would depend on my relationship with the person as well. I would rather be liked by my lover, liked by friends, and respected by those i don't know well and that i work with.
Basically what i'm saying is that the question needs to be narrowed, and i think that you may want to reflect upon these things in your paper.

chris.... I think you need to PM me because you're like the freakin God of writing essays.... can I hire you?

i agree with chris some people i would want them to like me while others i would like respect from them like co workers or aquantances and other people i dont know as well. just because someone respects you does not mean they like you but to me it would seen that if someone likes you then they also respect you because respect should be shown to those you like taking their feelings into consideration. if the latter is true then i would want to be liked by all because respect would be implied. sounds like the machaveli principle....would you rather rule by fear or with love.

take my rec-drug using buddies who blow lines every week...they are friends and i would do anything for them, but i don't respect them at all as people because they are weak willed.
so for me, respect transcends just 'liking' a person...i would rather have people feel that way about me.

When you're respected, you don't have to worry about whether or not people like you. That's how I see it. If I feel respected, I don't care if people like me or not, as long as they respect me when I walk into a rooml. RR

I'd rather be respected. With respect comes courtesy and thought.
Think about how many friends you have that you just run over sometimes. You take their food, take their clothes, even beat them up.
Would you do that kinda stuff to someone you respected? Hell nah.

Actually I believe the proper form would be to seperate the word "I'll" in two words "I will". It is inproper to start a sentence with a short cut.

read a little book called the Prince by Machiavelli - and they you will know why "it is better to be feared than loved" - if you are a leader - but for your personal life, that can be quite different - being feared can be lonely, being loved can be fulfilling but lovers can be fickle and false while fear causes fealty as long as you are fearsome

Definately. At least read a synopsis of it, it will give you a great idea about what to write about. In summation, being liked will result in those around you walking all over you. Being respected, rather, being feared and respected is quite favorable. In my opinion, if you need people to like you, you are a weak person. I forgot who said it, but I've always believed it..
"You may not like me, but you will respect me."

For me i don't feel that i have to be feared. I know me and nobody else knows me like me. What i am trying to say is that i know what i can do and nobody else does. That is the way i like it.
Among the ladies i am known as the sweet and sensative guy
I like to be underestimated
