it's a hormone created in the adrenal glands which helps regulate among other things cardiovascular function and the bodies use of protien carbs and fats. When your body is stressed, it's release is hightened. The bad thing about this is increased cortisol release breaks down muscle building protiens, a very bad thing. Then the broken down protiens are then used to create glucose in the liver to handle the stress.

Cortisol (catabolic stress hormone) also supress testosterone . It can lead to increase of fat (especially on the stomach) and decrease of muscles and strength.

If you don't eat when your body needs food the cortilsol level can elevate and it breaks down the amino acids in you muscles and use it as fast energy for your body. Physically or mentally stress, hard work over time, lack of sleep and rest cause the same thing. This is why you shouldn't work out for 2-3 hours. You will get overtrained.

Shortly, too high levels of stress hormones are not desirable.

A combination of stress or hard work for a long time very often and no food make your body catabolic. I have experienced that, and it's depressing when you feel your body shrink week by week.
