Direct Bank Money Transfer

I was wondering on how safe it is to do a direct bank transfer of funds to order some stuff. It is not much but about less then a grand. I was given two options of money in the mail or direct bank transfer but I'm not to aware of the bank transfer. Has anyone ever done this? or shall I do money in the mail and have the person sign for it?

Money in the mail via Priority Mail with a Delivery Conformation number.

I doubt any source will be willing to sign for it.

bank to bank transer has a fee, of like.......30 bucks aprx., but it's safe as far as I know.
