Website monitoring is standard procedure within most businesses, I would have thought it would be more common within the educational sector.
Do you have your own logon codes for when you use the machines ?
Do you use the same machine all the time ?
If there is no record of who uses what and when, then I wouldn't worry, however you can guarantee the IT manager will be able to see the history of URL's that have been visited on the network.

since you need to log on to the computer, to log on to the network, they have a reasonable assumption that it was you, since the mac is the actuall computer #####The answer to your every question

Can it be done? Yes, quite easily. It is a waste of time to go through each URL request tho, esp considering 100000's of DNS lookups and URL requests each day even on a small network, but maybe some people like it.
They even read what you post on this forum, just by looking at data packets. I doubt they will come after you from visiting http://www.yoursource.com; since they can't really prove anything. The ordering is done https:// wether you use WU or credit card which can't be read sine its encrypted, and just by visiting http://www.yoursource.com you haven't broken the law...
There is really no way to prevent this type of stuff, because it's not your network. There are a few sneaky tactics, but they are still limited in effectiveness.

Who gives a shiat....now if you are hitting kiddie porn sites or other sites that may be on the watch list by the university...you could be tagged. There should be some rules/regs and shiat by your university about visiting porn sites and shiat. For instance, at my place of employment...i get a nice little nasty-gram that says...this site if prohibited. If you visit the same site again, it will pop up again....now let's say you visit a similar site...I will get yet another nasty-gram saying....this site is prohibited....Two many of those will raise a red flag....which in turn will have the network tooligans looking at my surfing habits. From here, they can set up a software sniffer or hardware sniffer to capture the data packets to reconstruct what you are seeing on your computer (this will take up a lot of resources and time, so it is not generally done unless really needed). If it is kiddie porn...you is toast...since kiddie porn is illegal contraband (meaning just like marijuana/cocaine and shiat)...the law will have to intercede at this point. If it is you just running around the bodybuilding forums or looking at naked 60 year old grannys then that's your choice and i'm sure the network tooligans won't care unless they have rules against looking at porn..then they may send you an email or some shit to tell you to stop.
Bottomline: they can if they wanted to but why would they? Unless you raise enough red flags to draw their attention.
