you should know that Benadryl isnt always an alergy medication. Here in Australia its actally a cough suppressant because our benadryl doesnt contain diphenhydramine (the antihistamine).
From Medline Plus: "Diphenhydramine, an antihistamine, relieves red, irritated, itchy, watery eyes; sneezing; and runny nose caused by hay fever, allergies, and the common cold. It also may relieve the itching of insect bites, sunburns, bee stings, poison ivy, poison oak, and minor skin irritation. Diphenhydramine is also used to prevent and treat motion sickness, induce sleep, treat Parkinson's disease, and relieve cough caused by minor throat or airway irritation"
From Medicinenet:
GENERIC NAME: diphenhydramine
BRAND NAME: Benadryl
DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine with anticholinergic (drying) and sedative properties that is used to treat allergic reactions. Histamine is released by the body during several types of allergic reactions and--to a lesser extent--during some viral infections, such as the common cold. When histamine binds to its receptors on cells, it causes changes within the cells that lead to sneezing, itching, and increased mucus production. Antihistamines compete with histamine for cell receptors; however, when they bind to the receptors they do not stimulate the cells. In addition, they prevent histamine from binding and stimulating the cells. Diphenhydramine was originally approved by the FDA in 1946.

There are 'cold medicines' that have combinations of benadryl and pseudophed and these are kept behind the counter due to their pseudophed content but benadryl is completely and utterly legal.
Note: You get more mg of diphenhydramine per pill in most 'sleeping aids' like NYTOL than you do in 'cold medicines'
