for example, creatine has been around for years, but since it works, you're continually finding "new and improved" products with creatine in them. though creatine itself can't be "improved" on, just the fact that it's still such a prominent product and has lasted shows it's effectiveness.
as far as replies on if it works or not, you can't fully trust them, because remember the majority of the population will respond to placebos simply because they think they should be getting results. some people get worked up that they're on some new supplement and train harder, focus more on their diet, or do something else along those lines that is what actually improves their results, but they'll give the credit to the supplement. sometimes, just the pure psychological factor alone will give them better results, but that doesn't have anything to do with what they're actually taking.
the best info you can get is from independent researchers that are not funded by the makers of the product to do the research. this will show they're not swayed either way to give results. even still, you'll still want to check at least a few of those considering money is sometimes handed "under the table" to research labs.
regretfully, i believe it will be quite some time before we know for sure if this stuff works or not. you can try it, but at this point, the general public (aka us) is not aware of that chems effectiveness or more importantly, it's side-effects.
