Ever heard that flaxseed oil can bind to testosterone?

I was on another board and someone posted a study that showed flaxseed oil had en effect of slowing down the growth of prostate cancer. It binds to the testosterone and decreases its effectiveness somehow. If this is the case, I suppose its time to toss the flax. Anyone have info?

According to this website, it's the lignans in ground flaxseed - not the oil - that bind to testosterone. Most of the lignans are filtered out when the oil is extracted from the seeds.

If you look at the studies done on Prostate Cancer causes, Test is not the cause. The finger is heavily pointed at DHT and Estrogen

yeah, but if I remember right test can convert into DHT? Not sure on that. Sounds like the flaxseed oil we buy though is safe since its filtered, so no worry anyhow.

without a doubt. gotta keep those cholesterol levels down somehow, and flax is one of the safest, cheapest, and easiest ways to do so.

Antitumorigenic Effects of Flaxseed and Its Lignan, Secoisolariciresinol Diglycoside (SDG)

Flaxseed consumption influences endogenous hormone concentrations in postmenopausal women.

Here is what he posted: Lignans and Prostate Cancer
Testosterone is the male sex hormone, thought to be important in the progession of prostate cancer. Lignans in flax seed bind testosterone in the same manner as for estrogen (above). Researchers at Duke University found that supplementation with milled flax resulted in significant decreases in both total and free testosterone in prostate cancer patients. They also found a decrease in PSA levels in men with early stage prostate cancer.

I found another good link posted . It does state that a 5% diet of flax decreased test but a 10% diet actually went the other way and increased test concentrations. http://health.msn.com/menshealth/art...ntid=100100459
