Is it necessary to have the tracking # in order to pick up a Western Union pymnt?

I'm almost positive you can just give them the name and the name of the sender, my buddy swears they wont give it to him unless he has the confirmation #, and stupid me has misplaced it. But I've picked up WU's b4 w/ no problem, no track # needed. Anybody?

Its the MTCN number and I've always needed it to collect funds. It should be on your paperwork that you received from the agent after the transfer.
