Getting stuff via mail: What's the purpose of DC#?

I got a dc# for my postal delivery. Although I can see the purpose of the source getting a dc#, what's the purpose of me getting one?

You know when it is coming. And if it is being held up for one reason or another.

actually, a dc # provides nothing for you except that your package was delivered, a tracking number gives you step by step order. So a DC # just lets the sender know his package was delivered.
