    increasing effectiveness of orals

I recently read that grapefruit juice can increase the effects and side effects of cholesterol lowering drugs and OTHER medications by up to a factor of 10 yes 10, and scientists now why, grapefruit is loaded with compounds called furnocoumarins. the compounds inhibit an enzyme in the stomach that chews up medication before its absobed, with the enzyme suppresed the body absorbs more of the drug. juice may contain higher levels of the compound than the whole fruit because manufacturers somtimes add furanocoumarin-rich grapefruit oil to boost flavour.just some food for thought .
