I would say that the effects of narcotics (vicoden) would be similar to the use of NSAID's and worse, expecially on the liver. I would try to stay away from these drugs, but not sweat using them sparingly.

IMO they are bad news. I was in a motorcycle wreck a few years ago and had to take them for an extended peroid(~6 months) and can tell you first hand they are evil. Seem heaven sent at first becaue it helped with the pain but does not take long to get a tolerance and then start working on you mentally and physically. I know it's difficult being in pain but I would strongly recommend finding a non-narcotic pain relief. I know easier said then done but you will be inifitely better off w/o them. GL

Just be careful. Narcotics mask even the "good" pain - the pain that tells you your form is off a little. Of course, slight adjustments in form with big weights can cause problems.

yeah Vicodin has a tylenol in it which as a daily limit of 4200mg any higher and u will **** up ur liver. U do wanna use them sparingly since they are dosed pretty much on an as needed basis

From what I understand, opiate derived dope is not catabolic...However, most narcotic medicines have another compound in them...Usally this compound is an OTC pain reliever, which is catabolic...so, if u can get your doc to precscribe an opiate only med, u should be ok in regards to the catabolic issue...
Like others have said tho, any narcotic is going to have much worse side effects to worry about, rather than it being catabolic...Peace!

opiates do impact body composition...for one, i believe they reduce NO but the pathway isnt well-established...there's a reason heroin junkies have no interest in sex; their dicks generally dont work and a big part of that is NO (pde5 inhibitors like viagra and cialis increase NO a great deal, such that BB competitors use them pre-show). i can say for first-hand that on high dose codeine, i had to be begged, and my shit was not as hard as usual.
there are other corollaries...check pubmed.com for hydrocodone (that's vikes) and nitrous or protein, etc etc
but if you have to have them, they arent going to keep you from growing if you're eating and juicing right.

My friend has first hand knowledge and he says that he feels more ripped on vicodin.Sounds weird right. It makes you sweat and in the gym that a good thing.Although they are bad for you, they are good for pain. The biggest problem is that they are a respiratory suppressant and that sucks if you are doing cardio. There is no easy way around a permanant injury that requires pain relief, especially those on or near the spine. Some people say try breathing techniques, but that shit doesnt work. Go swimming...bullshit.As long as you moderate the intake it should be fine.
