    Drug testing in the military

I am going to clarify this issue because of the constant postings on this subject. I am an Army Officer and have been in for 7 years.

The good thing: The military's random drug test does NOT test for any steroid or any increase in hormonal levels.

The downfall: Military officer's and NCO's (not only commanders) have the right to request testing of anyone they suspect of juicing through the soldiers commander. It's a matter of calling the suspected soldiers commander on the phone and telling him of your assumption. Most commanders would rather turn their heads because is reflects negatively on their command when someone tests positive for ANY drug. If the officer is Captain or above, he can submit his own letter to request testing. Testing in the Army is more widespread, due to officer's having more one on one contact with their soldiers. The reason people aren't tested more is because most officer's don't realize they have this power, or know how to go about it exercising it.

The solution: Since you can be tested at any time with little assumption, follow these tips.

    1. Stock your house or dorm with tons of protein powders. Try not to put the word steroid in anyone's head.

    2. Do not lift weights at the base gym (unless necessary, since the people that will be familiar with steroids will most likely be the weight lifters.

    3. Don't strut around base with your tight shirts, jealous people will note you.

    4. Do not discuss your use with ANYONE. If they suspect you of juicing they might interrogate your best friend. And the military is VERY good at interrogation ( I used to be one).

    5. If people are questioning you of using, then quit! A lot of people write in and say " everyone knows I use but they don't care". That's the worst mistake you can make! Some asshole will start looking up regs on how they can burn you.

    6. Do something that gets out of your system quickly (test.). If you do test positive then they are supposed to test again immediately, although this process usually takes up to two weeks. At this time your test levels could be back to normal.

Hope this clears things up. If you have anyone more questions, please ask!

I've never heard of anyone getting tested at your final physical. As you probably already know, testing for steroids is way too expensive for them to test everyone. I wouldn't worry about it.

What are you taking? Have you looked up the detection time of the steroid you're taking?

He should come off right now. Some of his labs may come back jacked up & that will only lead to more questions. Mines did my liver panel, plasma & a tyroid panel (don't know why they did that) came back way up (or down in the case of my thyroid). I was tap dancing around questions for a minute. After they draw blood & do part 2 he's GTG.

This is a good post. This question is asked alot.

I was in the Canadian Forces for 2 years, and there was a guy in my regiment who juiced and he went around telling EVERYONE. He ended up with the nickname 'Juice'. Anyhow, none of our officers or senior NCMs did anything... even though we're positive they knew as well. He didn't even need to go around telling everyone, you could tell just by how extremely bloated he always was.

I guess it just ***ends on where you are, what outfit you're in, and what kind of people you're surrounded by.

I've been in for 12 years and have known people that have gotten tested and it's not as simple as an "OFFICER" making a phone call with only suspecting someone of juicing. there needs to be more evidence than that...testing someone for steroids in the military is very expensive and if there going to test someone they need hard evidence like catching him/her in the act of injecting themselves or finding the steroids in there posession for them to be tested as there are many different kinds of steroids and they need to know what kind to look for in there system...or else it's a waste of time and money...just assuming someone is on steroids is not a good enough reason to test a soldier and the command element isn't going to waste the time and money to test just one soldier because some officer "made a phone call". my good friend has been to all the piss testing schools the military has to offer and is the person who sets up all the piss tests for our unit and when there is a rumor that there going to test someone for juice he just laughs because unless he/ has been caught red handed then theres ABSOLUTLY NOTHING ANYONE CAN DO ABOUT IT...NOTHING NOT EVEN A PHONE CALL FROM AN ''OFFICER"...without hard evidence...but other than that the advice you gave on how to cover your tracks was good except the quit part because as soon as you lose all your weight once your clean you just showed everyone who thought your juicing they were right...so stay on your course and always be seen with food in your hand as that is a good indicater as to why your so huge because your always eating and lifting.

You're dilusional about your assumptions. Apparently you have an ego complex about the whole "OFFICER" thing. If you would read my post carefully, NCO's also can excercise the power of assumption.

Let me explain my position to you, I am a Captain and I work for Jag. I know military law and I also know A LOT about steroids in the military. Everything I stated is extremely valid.

"Hard evidence"...Haha, do you think we're civilians? What rights do you think you're entitled to? The power of assumption is a powerful tool. I know numerous kids that have been kicked out due to some scrawny, jealous LT talking the soldiers commander into signing the periodic test form, under DOD directive 1010.4. It's an OER bullet for him..

"Testing someone for steroids in the military is very expensive." You're right, it's expensive to test everyone for steroids. That's why it's up to the commander to test who he wants, when he wants to. Do you honestly think the commander doesn't have an extra $300 in his multi-million dollar budget to do a steroid test??

I'm not going to pick apart your run-on paragraph any longer, it's too late. Please everyone, do me a favor and disregard everything this gentleman has stated. Follow his advice and you will get into trouble.

Your jag very well could be different, but what I stated is the common practice at the 3 bases where I've been Company Commander.

Just be careful, man. The Military is very good at downplaying things until someone decides to start pushing the issue. Then, all of a sudden, the steroid issue becomes very popular and every commander wants to follow suit by pissing and bleeding suspected soldiers. Catching a doper is not as bad as NOT testing a suspected doper...that's their mentality.

1/3 of my unit is on AAS...most CDR's know but no one cares until someone gets caught...which only happens every once and awhile but they just get an article 15 loss of one rank and some pay...my buddy got busted and that's all that happened...they really didn't care that he was using just that he got caught...we get away with alot more than most units/soldiers do.
