If you do low intensity cardio and not let yor heart rate get over approx 130bpm your body will only burn fat and not tap into muscle for fuel. Continue eating alot of protein and you should be fine. I have not tried var so I cant comment on how in effects cardiovascular fitness but it should help lean you up while retaining strength and muscle.
