if you can actually do it, it wouldn't hurt i guess. i can barely reach back there anyways so i don't bother. i cramp up bad enough as is. no need to add insult to injury.

isnt listed as a potential complication on the wiki entry. it is advocated, however, in pretty much every online manual.
Intramuscular injection
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Intramuscular (or IM) injection is the injection of a substance directly into a muscle. In medicine, it is one of several alternative methods for the administration of medications (see Route of administration). It is used for particular forms of medication that are administered in small amounts. Depending on the chemical properties of the drug, the medication may either be absorbed fairly quickly or more gradually. Intramuscular injections are often given in the deltoid, vastus lateralis, ventrogluteal and dorsogluteal muscles.
[edit] Complications and contraindications
When the gluteal muscles are used, injections should be made on the upper, outer quadrant of the buttock to avoid damaging the sciatic nerve. Injection fibrosis is a complication that may occur if the injections are delivered with great frequency or with improper technique.
Thrombocytopenia (low platelet counts) and coagulopathy (bleeding tendency) are contraindications for intramuscular injections, as they may lead to hematomas.

You can do whatever you want to YOUR body, however you are taking a risk if you don't aspirate . So the choice is yours
If you don't mind the gamble then don't aspirate

What gamble?
I don't aspirate .

Exactly. I have a friend who has been a nurse for 16 years doing many IM injections, in that time she has drawn blood on aspirating only twice, but thats enough for me to always aspirate.
Think of the consequences if she hadn't, there would have been the possibilty of a micro pulminary embolism that could have caused the death of a patient. This is even more of a possibilty with the oil based carriers we use.

There are many mixed opinions, personally I have never had to restick. I try to always aspirate , but sometimes I forget, it really only takes a second so why not? I also hear that your chances of hitting a blood vessel in the glute are very low. I am assuming you are new to injecting, it gets pretty easy once you do it a few times and get the nerves out of the way. So if you can, try to aspirate.

I suppose the gamble would be taking the chance of injecting into a vein or not. Although it may be a slim gamble, there is still that chance right? Or are you saying it is impossible to inject into a vein, thus not a gamble at all to not aspirate ??
I aspirate, but that's just how I roll......I feel better doing it
