NEVER lie to the police. that's generally a felony crime in most jurisdictions in America. that's exactly how they imprisoned Martha Stewart (and she's likely got better lawyers and more money than you do... which is the mother's milk for rights and justice in the country). she was convicted of no other crime.
the correct conduct, IMO, is to decline to answer any questions, other than giving your name, which they can shake you down for anyway. i'd return each question with a question, such as "who and what are you investigating? or why are you questioning me? or what sort of crime are you investigating?", etc. they will not generally answer your questions truthfully, so what does that tell you. do you think they'd come over because they want you to be a REAL friend?
by leaving a trail with a credit card, you are providing law enforcement with evidence. if you can't trust a someone with a cash/western union or other more anonymous form of payment, you may be dealing with the wrong person... how could you trust them to provide any substance you'd consider putting into your body... when you're looking for some misplaced protection from your bank or card provider?
repeat after me... this sounds very serious officer, i'd like to have my attorney look at your questions before i provide an answer. please send me a letter and i will be happy to take serious consideration for each question.
and if they send you a letter, send it to your lawyer or ignore it.... never lie.
