    oil pulmonary embolisum

Hello, Im new to the forum hope this question is in the right place. after giving myself a IM injection oil based I became dizzy felt a strong pain in my chest. Within 10 seconds my chest felt like it was constricted and I could not even take the smallest breath, as I was about to lose consciousness my chest relaxed a little and I was able to start breathing again slowly in between coughs. I am sure it was an oil pulmonary embolisum caused by some oil running back through the needle hole and into a vein.(I always asperate before pushing the plunger down)I am now fine. My GP thinks it was probably what I diagnosed. My question is if it happened again what could I do to help clear the blockage would an epipen help? As this is a very scarey and life threatening acurrance I would really like some advice. Thank you very much.

this will happen to most people who inject themselves enough times over a long enough period.

    Don't use an epipen, man.

Your best bet is preventative: be sure to aspirate before every injection.

I do aspirate every time, I am always very careful this is why I was shocked when it happened. Is there any meds I could use to help the blockage on its way if it ever happens again? I have not used since this accurrance but I want to start a course, but need something in place just in case. Thanks

Right. I know when I pin that it's impossible for me to keep the needle at the exact same depth especially as it takes me about 15 seconds to push all the oil in.

HI I injected in the hip. I find the glute to hard to reach with both hands and hard to see if Iv drawn blood. Think I might have to use the thigh next time, if I can get up enough courage. Ha ha

    ABSTRACT
In the search for a simple, objective, reliable and sequential diagnostic hepatography, an oily contrast medium, Ethiodol {ethiodized oil), was purposely injected into the portal vein system of dogs. In the absence of a porto-systemic shunt, the smallest amount of Ethiodol which produced faint roentgenographic visualization of pulmonary oil embolization was about 2.50 ml/kg. The average trapping capacity of the livers of six dogs was 2.89 ml/kg. The average acute lethal dose was 5.10 ml/kg. It was not possible to extrapolate the lethal dose of intraportal Ethiodol in humans. Also, the consideration of a threshold dose level (corresponding to the trapping capacity of the liver), near or above which the problem of pulmonary oil embolism will become significant, is only a rough concept. However, the results of this study serve to emphasize that the potential hazards of using intraportal oil contrast media for clinical purposes should be kept in mind.

I've heard of people getting a slight cough after inject but this seems scary as hell. Who else has this happened to?
