Quad injection - should I insert fast?

I am going to try to shove the needle in fast this time as when I do it skow it is quite painful and makes my muscle twitch bad. My question is what if when I go to jam the needle in I hit a nerve? I will be going at a high speed so there will be no time to pull back. What have you guys done and what do you suggest?

If you hit a nerve: shooting pain, muscle twitch or limb jumping. Perhaps lingering pain and/or numbness.

I do a slow push, but when I first began and was super nervous about shots I would jab it in. And yes, I have hit a nerve once or twice-- it's far from a usual occurrence. It's not fun. I just switched the pin, manned up, and tried again nearby.

Never ram in a needle. go at the slow rate and as you feel the twitch then speed up but DONT jam it in! aspirate and inject slowly. wait a few seconds then pull the pin out, stop jamming it in you can damage your muscle and create scar tissue.

yes. never ram needle... some people will actually break off pins when they are flush with the skin and get them stuck b'c they get hidden under the skin... bad news...

so... if you get muscle twitches, you're either going through nerves, or tensing up your muscle. you don't have any crazy nerve bundles on the anterior side of your thigh/femur... so don't worry about nerve damage... worry about doing a bad glute injection, b'c if you don't do the upper outter you can hit a big spinal-to-leg nerve bundle which is often the nerves responsible for sciatica.

you might want to try to head the quad first... hot shower or heating pad... then make sure your leg is relaxed. try pulling your skin taught with your not pinning hand, then poke the needle through quickly a few mm's... then start doing a slow insertion from there.

obviously always be sterile, never re-use, aspirate first, slow injection... then a good way to get a clean getaway is to recreate that skin tension you used to poke through the skin... and do a quick pull out.

I agree that your prolly not fully relaxed. try this when injecting quads.

sit flat on the floor. put a small pillow under the bend in your leg, this is the only way i can get FULLY relaxed. i like going high on the quad, the closer I get to the teardrop the more soreness i get. grab a chunk of meat with your off hand and squeeze it together when inserting needle, be careful not to just grab fat or skin, make sure your grabbing muscle. I insert the needle while its pinched, for some reason this reduces insertion pain for me. once needle is in let go of pinch slowly. then finish the job. this may not work for everyone but it works for me.

edit: just realized you already said this.

Thanks guys. Yeah just injected and I didn't ram it in. I broke through the skin slowly and then sped up after that and it went fine. Felt a slight muscle twitch but kept going at a pretty decent speed and all went well.

And this may be a dumb question but is it possible to inject into a nerve like you would a vein?

    Thanks all.

I was trying to avoid some scar tissue in my delt yesterday, tried hitting outside a lil. damn i went through something maybe a nerve but it hurt. I doubt you could even inject directly into a vein even if you tried. doing a IM injection that is.

I go so slow it's pathetic. LOL Really after hitting a nerve a couple times I got SLOW even breaking the skin and when I do get close to a nerve I just stop for a second, reposition my other hand on my leg and continue. It's like the nerve moves out of the way and the needle just slides past like butter. Make sure all the alcohol is evaporated after cleaning your leg or it may sting a little at first.

this is exactly how i do it as well. I go slow in all the way, if I feel a strong pain, i just pull out and re-insert at a new spot. Never have problems injecting into quads, but towards the last 4 weeks of my cycle, i start getting a little more nervous when pinning for some reason? weird.
