no pain normal?

My friend did his first shot today and said he was surprised at how little pain there was (it was a butt shot). Besides the initial little pinch he said he didnt feel anything else and was surprised when his friend said he was all done. Is this normal or could it mean something bad like the needle didn't get far enough in?

He used 1.5" 23g

needle is fine...mine did not hurt until the end of the next day, so it may be to early to say. (mine did not hurt at all when injecting) and I have a few buddies who did not get sore there first shot. very very mild sore

When done correctly they are usually totally painless.
