Diindolylmethane, commonly called DIM, is a chemical compound created during the digestion of cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. You can also take diindolylmethane as a dietary supplement. Diindolylmethane supplements are purported to be beneficial for a variety of health disorders, and some research supports the use of this substance for cancer treatment and prevention, according to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Consult with a qualified health care provider before taking diindolylmethane supplements rather than attempting to self-treat for a serious illness.
    Cancer Risks

Although some research indicates diindolylmethane is beneficial for preventing cancer and for cancer treatment, studies have shown conflicting results, according to eMedTV. It is possible diindolylmethane could stimulate the growth of certain cancer cells. Additionally, foregoing conventional treatment for serious illness in favor of unproven therapy is risky. Anyone who has cancer or is at increased risk of getting the disease should not take diindolylmethane without a health care provider's approval and supervision.

    Drug Interactions

Diindolylmethane may stimulate a family of enzymes called cytochrome P450-1 that can interfere with the body's processing of certain medications, such as quinolone antibiotics. It effectively competes with these medications for a particular enzyme and can make the drug ineffective. This is dangerous when the medication is essential for health. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking diindolylmethane supplements if you are taking any prescription medicine.
    Manufacturing Issues

Investigations have found some dietary supplements to be contaminated with heavy metals or prescription drugs, according to eMedTV. Additionally, in some cases the amount of the active ingredient did not match the amount listed on the label. Only buy diindolylmethane products from reputable manufacturers to make sure you have a quality supplement. Find out if the manufacturer adheres to Good Manufacturing Practice for drugs, or ask your pharmacist about the company.
    Lack of Research

Diindolylmethane is not associated with any negative side effects, but research on this supplement is lacking, explains eMedTV. Although diindolylmethane is derived from vegetables, taking a high-potency supplement is very different from eating these foods. Future studies with larger numbers of participants could uncover problems. Because of lack of research, it is not known whether diindolylmethane is safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for people with kidney or liver problems.
