Question How much air can kill you?

So - Ive always wondered....we all get a bubble here and there with HGH or HCG....and I was curious --- anyone know how much air is too much?

if you're pinning subQ, bubbles are completely harmless. its only dangerous if it goes directly into a vein.

At least 30cc IV. Nothing to worry about.

Agreed. Air in vein is more critical for someone who is laying in the hospital with a medical problem. It would take a lot of air AND a lot of bad luck for it to have an impact on a healthy adult. Believe it or not, particulate is overrated as well. Any "stuff" in you veins gets deposited in your lungs. From there it would exit through coughing.

I work at a pharma company and one of my old jobs was to investigate customer complaints and medical events. This info came from the nurses and doctors we would talk to when investigating the risk of complaints.

SubQ air pockets are generally harmless. Arterial It takes about 5ml of air directly in a vein per kg body weight to cause any significant complications. At 20ml of air, risks increase

SubQ air pockets are generally harmless. Arterial and venous air pockets are another matter, however it still takes a relatively large volume of air for complications to arise.

When a volume of air is introduced into a peripheral vein, it can make its way to the right atrium and ventricle and into the pulmonary vasculature. Here air occludes the microvasculature damaging the endothelial lining of the vessels and triggers a pulmonary edema/bronchoconstriction.

Small amounts of air are usually absorbed by plasma and hemoglobin, but larger amounts of air can interfere with pulmonary gas exchange and cause cardiac arrhythmias.

But just how much air is needed for this to occur? At least 20ml of air is needed to cause any serious complications and 100-300ml are needed to have fatal consequences.

I cant believ it takes that much! I am shocked by that. I freak out if the tiniest little air bubble is in the barrel and tell my buddy to make sure not to push it in. Ive probably wasted a decent dose doing that. WOW!

How can people inject heroin, and other toxins into their bloodstream, but test will kill you, or is that a myth.

Maybe this is a new guy response, but, couldn't you just hold syringe upright and "flick" the bubbles out?

i know im not alone on this one.

i INTENTIONALLY put a little bubble in there when injecting to chase the oil out of the needle. im NOT suggesting anyone else do this..but i do. just saying..

only time i don't intentionally put a bubble in is when i using hcg or anything that requires a slin pin - so small i don't worry about chasing a micro amount out of that small of a pin.
