Abscesses have similar signs but will almost always be accompanied by high fevers, and palpable tender mass at the affected site, chills, sweats - basically you'll be very sick. There are exceptions and variations but these are general signs and symptoms of cellulitis and subq abscesses.
Cellulutis can sometimes heal itself but this is highly suggested against as complications can ensue such as abscess formation, sepsis, and permanent loss of tissue via surgical debridement Often cellulitis can be difficult to distinguish from site irritation. When in doubt its probably best to see a doctor, especially if fever is present, symptoms are significant, and symptoms are getting worse or not improving. Abscesses will always need antibiotics (assuming it's bacterial) and often requires drainage via needle aspiration or surgical incision with debridement.
