    Prep for men's physique

    I just finished a men's physique comp with poor results. Finished 10th place but def thought I should have been top 5. I'm looking for some insight on what the hell they are looking for? I went from 225lbs down to 175 the day of comp. body fat was takin a week before and was right around 5%. I looked good but a little flat. I tried pumping up but couldn't. I carb loaded with fats and carbs but I don't think I loaded enough since I stayed a little flat for morning show. One thing I should mention is I have a lot of tats. Arms are sleeved and I have a big back piece. Does this score against me? There not random wanker tats of dragons they are works of art done by one of the best artists in my area. I'm just trying to figure this whole thing out. This was my first comp and I am debating to do another. Anyone know what's going on with this new division. Please leave out the no working out legs comments. Lol I do work mine every week

    Tats are a distraction for physique contests, also coming in flat is a big deduction. From what you described you placed where you belonged but a photo will tell the truth.

    The physique contests I have seen you are dead without highly visable engorged abs, while you are lean and muscular you lack the highly visable abs that the judges seem to really seek on physique comps.

    I feel that for many waiting till the last minute to load and loading very fast and big is a mistake. That is many people are better served by a slower more moderate loading phase.


    PS Dont take it wrong you look great I just dont feel you have optimised your physique as far as what the judges want to see.

    Agree. It's really easy to overdo the carb load in a physique show. Too full or too hard are both negatives in physique. This is one of the reasons I'm not crazy about it...nothing against guys that do it at all but counting off people, men for that matter, for being too hard...come on, that's ridiculous!

    All-in-all, although bodybuilding shows and criteria can vary from one show to the next based on judges preference, physique shows still have even more variances in them from show to show. I saw a friend from the gym last year win the overall in physique at a local show and exactly one week later went to another state did another show, looked exactly the same and didn't place. At the show he didn't place at the judges told him he was way too hard and a little too muscular for physique. At the show he won the overall at the week before one of the judges told him he was built perfectly for physique.....see the problem?

    Thant you for the feedback. I do see the inconsistencies in judging and I also know I need to get the abs more detailed. Ginny thing is that my abs looked better a week before the show. I am doing another show in may hoping that the first experience will help me prepare for better results. I am 37 yrs old so times not on my side

    Try not crabbing up this time. If you looked your best a week out from the show and being really full isn't that important in physique anyway, try sticking with what got you to your best leading up to the show all the way though. And when I say fullness isn't that important, in all physique competitions conditioning is far more important than anything else, this includes bodybuilding. In bodybuilding, a good full look is just an added bonus. If it negatively affects your conditioning or overall look, whatever that may be depending on the type of competition, then the loading phase was not successful.

    Give it another go buddy, learn from this one. Bit flat in the pics bring the abs up and you will do real good
