    Blood Pressure Friendly Foods

    Nov 7, 2010 | By Kelly Slattery

Your blood pressure can be linked to the amount of salt you consume because water follows salt around the body. When you consume too much salt, your body holds onto excess water. Your heart has to pump around the extra water, which leads to an increase of pressure inside your circulatory system. Table salt is made up of both sodium and chloride. Sodium is what causes the water retention in your body. To reduce blood pressure, you have to reduce the amount of sodium you consume. According to the American Dietetic Association, a recommended amount of sodium to consume ranges from 1,500 to 2,300 mg per day. Most people consume more than double that amount.

    Foods Naturally Low in Sodium

Fresher is better. Dating back to per-refrigeration days, food manufacturers have used salt in food processing to preserve foods and make them last longer. This is why most canned and processed foods tend to have a high sodium content. Choose fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, low-fat dairy and whole grains. Go for bakery fresh bread, purchase your meat, poultry and fish fresh and not frozen or flavored. Choose foods without added salt like unsalted air popped popcorn and roasted nuts. Choose foods which have been made with low levels of salt like low-sodium deli meats and cheeses, canned soups and sauces that say "low sodium" on the label.

    Salt Substitutes

Many people use Kosher salt or sea salt as an alternative to table salt which is also called iodized salt. Both Kosher salt and sea salt are made up of larger granules than table salt, so less kosher and sea salt can fit onto a teaspoon. According to the American Dietetic Association, all three types of salt contain 400 to 590 mg of sodium per 1/4 tsp. depending on the brand.

Try adding other herbs and spices to your cooking like garlic and onion powders, or an herb seasoning mix.

    Reading a Food Label

The only way you will truly know how much sodium is in a particular food is to check the label on the back. This will tell you exactly how many milligrams of sodium the item has per serving. You can count up milligrams and try to keep your total within the recommendations, or you can look to the right of the label at the percentages. There is a general rule of thumb for reading food labels which makes the process quick and easy. If the nutrient you are looking at, such as sodium, is 5 percent or less, that food is considered low in that nutrient. Conversely, if the percentage is 20 percent or more, that food is considered high in that nutrient. For example, canned soup can have up to 45 percent of your recommended daily value for sodium; this is quite high and should be avoided if you are trying to cut sodium out of your diet.

I have a wrist one OMRON(intellisense) and my wife(RN) has brought it to the hospital and she says it's accurate +-1
But some OC supps would be hawthorn berry, vinigear pills. they work, but nothing works better IMO than good ol' fashion cardio.

Maybe if you're 12 years old.

It doesn't bother me a bit. Just a prick from the needle, watch it, and get out

If you post things over and over again, i find it much easier to keep a copy with the link handy, and then simply post the information for the reader to read and absorb.

Depending on the question, i have my own default answers i authored, or a link to someone esle like Marcus's well known threads for instance.

When you see the same question 10x a day everyday it's much easier to copy and paste the links to quality information that should've been read and understood from the get go. People are just lazy and want everythi9ng spoon fed to them so they have to do as little as possible and unfortunately that is their reason for trying steroids as well...........to get as much as they can with as little effort as possible. Kind of sad really!

here's how I look at it...

....if you need the meds, then take the meds. They are really safe with minimal sides. If your blood pressure is marginal, then take the meds. My doctor told me a few years ago that he doesn't need the meds, but takes them anyways. Really no sides, and nothing but upside.

You can take natural supps and restrict sodium and that's all good. But once you get to a certain point in your life, if you need the meds, then bite the bullet and take the meds.

    No harm, no foul.
