Help with thyroid problem/diet
Hello i've been helping my brothers gf attempt to lose weight. She has a thyroid problem and has been prescribed T3 but is unwilling to take it, says it makes her unbearably restless.
Wondering if anyone has any tips/information on what can be done to help her lose weight through diet and or some kind of drug that would combat her dysfunctioning thyroid.
So far she has only lost a couple pounds over the last 3 weeks cutting out all sugars/simple carbs like bread an milk an sticking to meat/salad with a carb up/refeed day when feeling depleted or metabolism slows. Thanks.

She has been giving medication to help her and she doesn't want to take it mad it would help her lose the weight quicker because her thyroid would be functioning normally has she spoke to her doc about this he/she could give her something to help with the restlessness

I said i would come on here an see what i can find out, i told her to get bloodwork done she is getting that on monday so i can post it up here as i know there as some savvy people here who can understand it.
Did not think to try and solve the restlesness. I will tell her to ask the doc about how she can improve that so she can utilise the very thing that will most likely help her the most!
I did get the feeling by her not wanting to take the T3 at all any attempt at weightloss would be less than impressive. Ill see what can be done.

Well, how long did she take it for before she gave up? T3 takes a little time but once your body adjusts to it, the side effects generally go away. For me, I get body aches that are very annoying, but they go away in a week.

i dont think she knew her difficulty to lose wait was so much due to her thyroid but more that she'd been dealt bad cards in life. I only made the connection from coming on here an reading about what people had used T3 for.
I dont know austinite i will find out more details on monday and report back. I think it would help if i showed her your post, it will help her to read someone elses experience and how you've adjusted to it.

Heres the hormone test but the doc said she needs to wait 6 months to get another test cause shes on BC pill an she needs to see a specialist after that 6 months. So nothing will happen till then really.
However i have to admit that she only took these test because i told her too not that she didn't already have a thyroid problem she knew this but didn't wanna take the T3 because of side effects. I am simply posting this up to add insight to this thread. I was already going to get her to take T3 again but on a low dose and for longer until some of the side effects can reduce as austinite said.

No. However she was on BC pill hence why the doc said she needed to wait 6 months before she could take another test as it effects the results.
All this is kind of a waste of time i feel since she was already prescribed t3 a year an a half ago but just refused to take it. But from what your saying the test looks ok.
I think i might just get her to take the T3 again since it was already something the doc wanted her to do and her ultimate goal is to lose weight not fix her thyroid. Although that may be a consequence of T3 while shes on it and just needs to find a steady dose to normalise it at the least, i suppose?

I am no expert but....
If that test was without taking T3 then she doesn't need T3.
Her thyroid looks fine and if anything she could be considered hyper not hypo. (Her T3 level is high.)
It is also very strange that the doctor prescribed her T3 alone. Most doctors prescribe T4 alone. Some do T4 plus T3. Some do animal thyroid extract since it contains both T4 and T3. I've never before you heard of a doctor prescribing just T3.
I would get a second opinion from a different doctor.
If her T3 level is high them adding T3 to her system would indeed make her feel like shit. Kind of like drinking way too much caffeine.

How likely is it that the BC pill gave a false reading for a girl though?
I agree though i will tell her to get another blood test with a different doctor. That at least, will narrow it down to a more definitive answer.
Also just discovered she has glandular fever, dont know if thats got anything to do with.. as a side issue.
