Interesting quote regarding not needing to aspirate!!!!!!!

I have pinched this quote from another forum and would just like your view on this statement!

"Aspiration may be relevant to detect possible penetration of gluteal artery when the dorsogluteal muscle is used – this would indicate incorrect initial land-marking. However, official guidance (DH, 2006; WHO, 2004) does not recommend routine use of the dorsogluteal muscle, and this should be sufficient to justify changing practice. If this site were removed from routine practice, aspiration could be removed from the procedure, simplifying it and reducing the risk of adverse events."

The quote before the link says there are adverse effects. I don't know of any. I only know of adverse effects from NOT aspirating.

I don't. If you know where to inject yourself in the glutes there's no reason to. Not saying I haven't nicked a vein a couple of times but not in a long time and not very often. High on the hip, no blood, no pip.

Its a best practices type of thing. There have been times where I've pulled back and blood drains in, and I'm not too much in the mood to inject that. Better safe than sorry.

^^^.....and then some are just plain lazy! Lol.

I frequently laugh when someone uses the "my MD/RN never aspirates". Well, first, most are better trained than the recreational steroid user on how and where to inject. Second, many IM injections administered by HCPs are NOT drugs suspended in OIL. Big difference between injecting water soluble compounds versus those suspended in a thicker oil.

If you're too lazy to aspirate and take a few extra seconds to ensure your own health and safety, put down the needle, put away the steroids , and go back to your sedentary lifestyle of eating chips and ice cream from the comfort of your LAZY boy.

This. Why NOT take the second just in case? Plus if you ever had the coughing fit by nicking a vein while injecting you would never not do it again.

Yeah i think it still happen if you nick on the way in but when you aspirate you are clear of vein. Aspiration certainly lessens the chance though.

Most RN's don't aspirate , in fact, many of them are trained not to in some areas. However, we have to remember that they rarely inject anything that is harmful if injected IV.

    Always aspirate, you ass pirates.

I have only gotten it from Tren and TNE, but the tren seems to be a little more pronounced.

I've nicked a vein so bad that the injection gave me an instant hotflash so intense that it nearly knocked me off my feet followed by a coughing fit that felt like I was coughing up oil. Also once after removing the needle blood shot two feet across the room. So hitting a vein can be tough. I've only nicked a vein maybe 4 or 5 times out of 350 plus injections in glutes. Very small odds. And once you learn where to inject there is no need to aspirate . If if makes you feel better cool do it. But nicking a vein won't kill you, it will usually only give you a hot flash and the sweats for a minute. I AM IN NO WAY PROMOTING INJECTING WITHOUT ASPIRATING ! Again what ever makes you feel safe. But the truth about the dangers of non aspirating should be expressed by someone with experience and the knowledge of what it is really like to actually hit a vein to such an extent. And it's def not because I'm lazy! Do I look lazy ! Hahaha ! You don't get built like this being lazy! It's because I'm knowledgeable enough and experienced enough not to have to.

What is the actual reason for the cough occurring?
