I took Valerian root pills for sleep and it helped. also they have these "sleep tea" blends all over the place I tried, they are mellow but relaxing. maybe try local grocer and see what kind of sleepy tea blends they got.

MEDITATION
is challenging at first (*especially for Western Culture). Try 10 mins or less at first...then build up. Takes some time to learn it, but it DEFINITELY helps. Many U Tube videos on this subject.
MEDS
Sleep medications like Tamazopam and Ambian, etc INTERRUPT Brain Signals to and from the body. What's happening is your body is tired, but your MIND won't stop and it becomes a HABIT. Groves form in your brain that are sometimes referred to as BRAIN LOCK where Signals that weren't there are not formed into grooves. Look it up.
GABA and sleep aides interrupts the signals between your brain and nervous system. The result is the mind SLOWS DOWN the signals from your brain to your body, allowing you to get to sleep. You gotta mega dose on GABA for it to work. Forget buying little pills at the Vitamin Shoppe. Purchase about 1lb of powder for less than a Steak Diner. Read up on it.

Ive also have always found my mind is busy especially when trying to sleep so as a type of meditation I try to daydream about something, sort of pretend I am in a certain situation, won a 100 million dollar lottery and all the things I would do step by step. It's actually very relaxing vs thinking about things you need to do or forgot to do or something that was a problem.

Yeah... I've been trying to put myself in a different situation aswell - like for me Baseball was my dream - so I still continue to sometimes play out how I would pitch to someone(as a catcher)... Starting em off say w/an off speed pitch to get em out on his front foot, etc, etc... And that has helped quite my mind so to speak, lately!

MY BODY
...."have respect for your sleep time" (a lot of guys don't...and it becomes a bad habit). Your body has natural rhythms to it. Mine are getting tired between 11-12. I set an alarm on my cell phone to remind to "TURN IT ALL OFF." If i miss my sleep window, my mind will keep me up another 2-3hrs. And i automatically get up at 7am. Its like catching a bus...if i miss it, its gone until the next one comes along. Respecting my sleep time.
MY MIND
ME THINKS, Insomnia is largely due to Cultural influences and BAD THINKING from living in the 21rst Century. Watch what you are thinking....and WHO YOU LISTEN TOO---the Mind is very powerful----
Your Mental Health is MORE IMPORTANT than your physical Health (imo). I've seen guys who for all intensive purposes, looked like a million bucks----but on the inside---felt horrible---and ended up self-destructing.
MY ATTITUDE
I came into this world---WITH NOTHING!...and that's the way i'm going to leave. "Accepting the Things I cannot change---the courage to change the things I can---and the wisdom to know the difference!" That little prayer---is part of my meditation.
I have NO CONTROL OVER PEOPLE, PLACES AND THINGS. The only thing i do have a chance at...is Controlling my Thoughts---and my Attitude. I don't always get it right...and that's ok. I get PO just like the next guy, but As long as i remember to GET BACK ON TRACK...AND focus on the things i have control over---the things that matter (f##k all the other chit---its not important)-----it will work out.
Hope for a better tomorrow...that's what we all want. You Mental, Physical and Spiritual Health....That's what counts in this life.
*Check into Guided Imagery, Positive Thinking and Positive Affirmations. It helps.

LOL yeah I hear you but I take a different approach. I start out slow like thinking of the few people I would want to help out in their life and what I would do to help them and the hopefully positive effect it would have on their life. I try to keep it simple as not to get all worked up. That for the day time, awake time fantasies. lol

Man I'm so stressed out I can't keep my mind from racing! I'm in the middle of a nasty divorce, on cycle, and had to move back to my parents ranch too... Life has not been very fun these days I have to admit!
