Would doing deads build traps as good as shrugs? Lets say I was pressed for time (and energy) and I just did deads, could I build some solid thick traps by just doing deads?

I would choose to do deads over shrugs if you have to make a choice although I don't think deads target traps the same it certainly is a better overall exercise. How can you have to make a choice between the two?
posting the same question three times builds good traps due to all the typing
Do deads and shrugs seperatly. I do shrugs on squat days. Your traps will be bigger if you do them both
Asking this question in the "Steroid Questions" forum........you deserve to have your traps rott.
chill, just answer the question and send him to the right forum

Seriously though, like Rickson said, why would you have to limit yourself to one or the other? You really don't have an extra ten minutes in your day to do a few sets of shrugs? You must be a busy man.
Oh yeah, wrong forum.

If you are so pressed for time, just do a full rep of deadlift and at the end just do a shrug. If the deadlift weight is too heavy to do a shrug rep with, just use the momentum from the deadlift and turn it into a shrug at the end. This will burn your traps good and save you time.
The reason I said I dont have time is because this is the workout I'm planning to do, keep in mind I am boxing 5 days a week, sparring 3 days a week, running 5 days a week (5 days doing miles 3 days doing sprints). I also haven't lifted in about a year. Therefore I don't want to burn myself out. I put in parntheses the body part which I believe that exercise develops.
Day 1 Tuesday
Squats 10 8 6 4 2 (quads,calves)
Deadlifts 10 8 6 4 2 (hamstrings, lowerback, traps)
Standing Lat raises 10 8 6 4 2 (side and rear delts)
4 way Neck Machine 5x10 (neck)
Day 2 Friday
Dumbell Press 10 8 6 4 2 (chest,front delts,triceps)
Lat Pulldowns behind neck 10 8 6 4 2 (lats)
Standing barbell curls (biceps, back forearms)
Reverse barbell curls (brachialis, front forearms)
If I were to do shrugs I would do them on Day 1 right after deadlifts.

When I was a powerlifter, I pulled 735 without having very impressive traps, so no. Now I do lots of deadlifts out of the rack, with emphasis on the upper body. That works best for me for building big traps.
i really dont understand how you dont have the extra time to do shrugs...the traps are just as important as any other muscle group...dont cheat yourself by not working a particular muscle group
I think shruggs arent that effective when compared to very heavy deads and powercleans or even farmers walks.
Ill eat another hamburgar with that shruggin energy![]()
As soon as I stopped doing shrugs, my traps grew into mountins. It's all about the heavy deads.
Shrugs are not needed nor advised IMO
As I said earlier - I always enjoy reading partyboy's responses - as usual - short and straight to the point.....Originally Posted by partyboynyc

I did heavy deads last night, and my traps/quads/hams/back/calves hurt!
D
Hey fellas how does my workout look though. Any comments on my workout plan. Keep in mind I havent hit the iron in a year and I'm also boxing and doing roadwork right now.
I think shrugs give my traps their peak and deads help build the thickness. I don't do very heavy deadlifts though and I have pretty good traps.![]()
Given your goals, Id ditch alot of things and just stick to the cores
Tues- squat, dead, or goodmornings + another ham/glute or quad exersize
Frid - some compound chest movement and then some row movement for lats and back
Thats all Id do. You got alot goin on and I think overtraining could be easy. Go heavy on them and be serious about it and youll hit every muscle group you listed easily.
How about some hanging cleans.

do hang cleans...best for traps
yeah i know its a 2 year old thread...

The muscles sore in my upper back from doing dead lifts usually reside around my shoulder blades. Just inside of them and all the way down...
kinda common sense imo
it'll be tough for anyone to grow on that, with all the extra curriculars you are doing. you would need to consume 5000 cals plus per day to see growth in any bodypart.Originally Posted by Slugger

Deadlifts definitely build AMAZING traps....but more so dumbel deadlifts b/c of the stretch you get when the dumbels pull farther forward and in. Go HEAVY...very very HEAVY. I do light one-arm dumbel shrugs (but with more of an upright rowing motion with a trap flex on the way down) after heavy deadlifts. It works amazingly well and helps to emphasize the insertion points whereas the heavy DB deadlifts build the mass/thickness. You'll have to fine tune the lighter one-arm DB movement and find out what hits your insertion points best.
i don't do shrugs anymore. it takes too much wiieght too get an efficient workout.
my traps are still huge as ever![]()
Hey slobberknocker nice one with the altered beast, havn't seen that in a while
