    Many Uses for Coconut Oil

I am finding it has amazing healing properties. A gal at gym swears by it. I mentioned I had a rash on elbow and that's when she turned me onto coconut oil. I applied to elbow and rash disappeared in just a few applications.

Use the oil that is solid at room temperature and organic.

Coconut is anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-protozoa, antimicrobial and a bajillion other things. Basically between it's anti-bad-stuff-ness and its lauranic acid, it's very good for the hair and skin. However, it should be said, that because coconut oil is hydrophobic and lipophillic, it has a tendency to dry out the skin if over-used. There's also no reason why you need to worry about the organic for external use.

It's also a good teeth whitener.

try it in cooking for a change of pace...

    -in oatmeal
-use as oil for making popcorn
-on toast or bread instead of butter

(if you use in cooking, you'll want to use a "high quality" form of coconut oil.)

One of the best options I've found is Organic yogurt for a skin moisturizer on a daily basis and then I have some recipes for masks and such. If you want to use masks and what not let me know.

I recently started cooking with coconut oil! I love it! Did steaks, asparagus, and baked sweet potato fries in it last night.

As someone who grew up in California in the 80's, I have a HUGE aversion to coconut in any way, shape, form, fashion, or concept as a food. To me coconut= Hawaiian Tropic tanning oil. Even *I* can cook with coconut oil and not taste it, if it's quality stuff. If you warm your coconut oil and it smells like coconut, it's crap quality and will flavor your food.

I love the health benefits I'm getting from cooking with it! So if I can eat it, and not taste it, anyone who tells you they can is imagining things! (Unless you are using crap quality oil)

Ill keep that in mind. It doesn't have a taste to it but it definitely has a smell. I love that smell. It cooks so good. I'm starting to use it more and more!

You'll use it immediately after you pat your skin dry from your shower as a full body and face moisturizer. The fats in it help moisturize and nourish the face and other dry patches while the lactic acids help gently "peel" the dead dry patches.

As for the masks, I'll get those written up this weekend and posted in the women's section since there are body masks as well.

Z, I'm known as a super-taster which is to food what a "nose" is in the perfume industry. I actually have about 50% more taste buds than the average person... So almost everything is a more intense flavor for me. My husband once thought I was nuts cause he bought me one of those slices of pound cake that's individually packaged at a convenience store and after taking one bite of it, I handed it to him and said it had coconut in it so he could eat it.... He didn't believe me so he read the label.... Down at the bottom of the ingredients list (which I hadn't even glanced at) among the flavorings and colorings and such was "coconut powder" and "coconut oil".... If I can't taste it when it's cooked with in a good quality oil (76degree melting point in case it matters), then it's pretty much impossible.

Before I get asked: you can be tested to find out if you're a super-taster or not. They dye your tongue blue and then put a card with a hole in it over your tongue. If you have more than x number of taste buds inside that hole you're considered a super-taster. When I was tested, my number was 150% of whatever number it was they were looking for.

So far, I've been happy with LouAna (76 degree melting point). The higher melting point one from LouAna I wasn't as happy with. Some of the organic ones actually have coconut shreds in them, so I don't like those... As a rule, I avoid the Asian brand ones b/c those are actually meant to convey some coconut flavor to foods. On the other hand, I only buy my Grapeseed Oil from an Asian market. Also, if you have an Indo-Pak in your area I prefer my almond oils from there.... (Did I mention I'm not a picky eater, but I'm very picky about ingredient quality?)
