i'm considering entering the georgia state games for bench press. i'm 27 yrs old and weigh 164lbs. does anyone know what class i will be in...novice, or open? what are the differences?

You would be in the 165lb Class and more than likely in the Novice Division if this is your first meet.

Novice for my federation is if you haven't totaled class 4 totals - so if you haven't lifted before it's novice - enjoy
