How or what causes this?
catabolism is a metabolic pathway. It is the opposite of anabolic(building). Many things can cause this: Stress, increased cortisol levels, starvaton, etc.
After a workout, your body is in an anabolic state for a ferw hrs, and then for the for approx. 12hrs you body dips into a catabolic state(breaking down). This catabolic state lessens or possibly all together ceases when a person is taking anabolic steroids.
Basically that is the best I can describe it.~right now~(I'm kinda tired)
